Online audio service user figures up a third since start of 2011

Music streaming website SoundCloud has reached the three million users mark – with the numbers having increased by a third since the start of this year.

The company made its iPhone app free at the end of last year and it’s thought that this is one of the reasons for the huge subscriber base growth.

“To see this kind of exponential increase is incredible,” said SoundCloud founder Alexander Ljung.

The company also recently received a rumoured £6.2 million in funding from Index Ventures and Union Square Ventures, reports Music Week.

Used by musicians and record labels alike, SoundCloud has been made the default music player for a host of blogs after signing a deal with The Hype Machine.

Unlicensed content can be easily removed from SoundCloud because of Audible Magic‘s fingerprinting technology, which was implemented at the end of 2010.
