Second allegation of rape at Latitude

19-year-old man arrested at festival

A second incident of rape has been reported at the 2010 Latitude festival.

A 17 year-old girl came forward yesterday (July 17) and told police she has been assaulted in a tent on the campsite on Friday night (July 16).

A 19 year-old man from Essex has been arrested and will be questioned today (18), although police say there does not appear to be a link with the earlier rape at the festival, which took place around 10pm BST on Thursday (July 15) night.

A 19 year-old woman told police she had been raped in the campsite after stopping a group of men to ask directions to the toilets. They led her into a wooded area, where she was assaulted.

One of the men is described as white with dark curly hair, about 5ft 7in (1.70m) tall, of medium build, possibly in his 20s and with a London accent.

Police and festival organisers have been appealing for information regarding the incident, and are reminding festival-goers to stay with friends.

Officers are asking anyone who may have seen a young woman wearing jeans, a yellow and cream top and a black cardigan with a small group of males on the site around 10 to 10:30 BST last night, or anyone who may have witnessed the incident itself, to come forward.

Anyone with information about the incident is asked to call the Suffolk Constabulary on 01473 613500.

Melvin Benn from Festival Republic who organised Latitude said: “Festival Republic are taking the allegation very seriously and are liaising closely with Suffolk Police in their investigation. We have significant sympathy for the victim of this most awful act and are so shocked that it should happen here.”
