Degrassi, featuring Bob Fairfoull, announce a series of Scottish dates...
Former Idlewild bassist BOB FAIRFOULL is to unveil his new band at a free show in GLASGOW this week.
Fairfoull joined Edinburgh three-piece Degrassi – who have been featured as New Band of the Month in NME’s Bring it On section – over Christmas, after leaving Idlewild following a bust-up on tour in October.
He told NME.COM that it seemed a natural progression, having been friends with Degrassi’s guitarist, Scott Smith, and drummer, Michael Branagh, for more than six years.
“Degrassi have that rock edge that Idlewildhad obviously moved away from. It’s quite song-based, but they can still be brutally noisy when they want to be. To me, fusing those two worlds was what I liked about Idlewild, we had both sides. And we lost that.
“It’s great to be in a band I’m genuinely a big fan of and play music that I would quite happily listen to in my own house. Hopefully Idlewild fans who miss the more rocky side of the band might be interested in Degrassi,” he added.
Speaking about his replacement, Gavin Fox, formerly of Irish band Turn, Fairfoull commented: “I thought it made sense, he’s a similar kind of bass player and he’s a good friend; it all made perfect sense, the same way it made perfect sense for me to join Degrassi. But it still feels a wee bit weird. It felt a bit like if you left your wife, and a week later she started shagging your brother. But I realised there’s no point being bitter, they’ve got to continue as a band.”
Within the last year, Degrassi have made their second appearance at T In The Park and toured with Cinerama and Eighties Matchbox B-Line Disaster.
Fairfoull’s first gig with them – playing guitar and possibly some bass, alongside current bassist Tom Nicol – will be a free show at King Tut’s in Glasgow on Wednesday (January 22), performing a short set to be broadcast later on Virgin Radio Glasgow.
This will be followed with dates at:
Aberdeen Lemon Tree (February 5)
Glasgow Nice ‘N Sleazy (15)
Edinburgh Bannermans (22)
