Hip-hop mogul suspected of intentionally running over two men
Update: According to the latest reports, Knight has now been arrested and is being held in West Hollywood on bail of $2m (£1.3m).
Suge Knight is being questioned by police after a man was killed and another injured in a hit-and run incident in Los Angeles.
The Death Row Records founder is suspected of intentionally running the men over after an argument on a film set. Sources told TMZ that Dr Dre and Ice Cube were present during the shoot – though not at the time of the incident.
“So far we have not confirmed it was him driving the truck. So we’re not saying Suge Knight was driving the truck at this time,” Lt John Corina, from Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, said. “Although we want to talk to him, since the truck supposedly belongs to him.
“From the people we’ve talked to so far, and we still have more witnesses to talk to, so far the people we’ve talked to say it looked like it was an intentional act. So we’re handling it as a homicide.”
Knight’s lawyer James Blatt confirmed that the hip-hop mogul had been driving at the time but claimed the incident was an accident. “He was in the process of being physically assaulted by two men and in an effort to escape he unfortunately hit two (other) individuals,” Blatt said.
He added: “He was in his car trying to escape. We are confident that once the investigation is completed, he will be totally exonerated.”
Police said a red pickup truck hit two men, a 55-year-old and a 51-year-old, in the car park of a fast food restaurant and then drove away. TMZ is reporting the victim is the actor Terry Carter, who appeared on TV series McCloud and the original Battlestar Galactica.
In October, Knight was arrested for allegedly stealing a paparazzi’s camera in Beverly Hills – a robbery he could face up to 30 years in prison for, due to prior convictions including armed robbery and assault. The alleged incident occurred just 12 days after Knight was shot six times in the stomach and arm at a party hosted by Chris Brown at Hollywood nightclub 1OAK. Despite his injuries, Knight was able to walk out of the venue with assistance from police.
