Dave Navarro appears in trailer for new documentary about his mother’s murder – watch

Mourning Son will be released on December 1

Jane’s Addiction guitarist and former Red Hot Chili Peppers member Dave Navarro has produced and will appear in a new documentary about the murder of his late mother.

The musician’s mother Connie Hopkins Navarro was killed in 1983 along with her friend Susan Marshall Jory. Connie Navarro’s ex-boyfriend John Riccardi was convicted of the murders over a decade later in 1994, having been on the run since the initial crime.

Mourning Son will recount the murder, the police hunt for Riccardi, subsequent trial and the effect the killing had on Navarro himself. Navarro was 15 at the time of his mother’s murder.

“I’ve never been one to not share what’s going on with me emotionally,” Navarro says in a trailer clip. “I think as an artist and as a musician that’s just inherent, that’s what we do.”

“It’s the most profound moment of my life and I don’t think I should just sweep it under the rug any more. It was just the darkest, most horrible moment in my life.”

Navarro spoke about his mother’s murder to HuffPost Live last year, saying: “My mother was in a relationship, the relationship ended, she wanted to go a different way, and her then-ex-boyfriend murdered her.

“Sometimes it’s hard to link domestic violence with murder because it’s such a broad jump. Except it is a domestically violent situation and probably the worst-case scenario in a domestically violent world.”
