5 Seconds of Summer address new single’s My Chemical Romance similarities

'She's Kinda Hot' has been compared to 'Teenagers'

5 Seconds of Summer guitarist Michael Clifford has explained why the band’s latest single ‘She’s Kinda Hot’ sounds similar to My Chemical Romance’s 2006 song ‘Teenagers’.

Following the track’s release last month, fans of both bands pointed out the similarities. According to Clifford though, the comparisons are because of the “12-bar blues”.

“I think it might be in the same key as well,” Clifford told Billboard. People were like, ‘You guys should sound more like My Chemical Romance.’ Then we do sound like My Chemical Romance and people are like, ‘Why the fuck do you sound like My Chemical Romance?’ Ugh!”

The Sydney group scooped the award for Worst Band at the NME Awards 2015 in Austin, Texas. Nominees included The 1975, One Direction, U2 and Bastille, but ultimately, readers decided on the relative newcomers, who released their self-titled debut album last year.

Clifford took to Twitter in response, posting: “Won the NME worst band award. I’m so damn happy right now. thx to everyone who voted.”
