Family sing Weezer’s ‘Buddy Holly’ in new Honda car advert – watch

The commercial pays homage to 2008 Will Ferrell film 'Step Brothers'

A new car commercial sees a family bursting out with an inexplicable rendition of Weezer‘s ‘Buddy Holly’.

The US band released the song back in 1994, the second single from their debut ‘The Blue Album’.

Now, Honda have a pilot for a new campaign in which they make reference to a scene from 2008 Will Ferrell film Step Brothers in which a family sing ‘Sweet Child O’ Mine’ in a car. This new commercial sees the Guns N’ Roses song replaced by Weezer’s.

A representative of the company told Brandchannel of the advert: “The sort of ironic thing is that millennials are aging.”

“We’ve sometimes got to catch ourselves in internal meetings when we talk about this hyper-youth target, because the older end of the millennial range is a 35-year-old who is raising a family and looking at family vehicles. That’s why our marketing has to be more fun and youthful than in the past.”

Weezer have released a new track called ‘Everybody Needs Salvation’. The song originally featured on a seven-inch recently released to the band’s official fan club, now surfacing online. Listen here.

Weezer were joined onstage earlier this year by frontman Rivers Cuomo’s father. Frank Cuomo joined son Rivers and his bandmates as they headlined the second day of LA festival Burgerama.
