Troubled singer died aged 48 yesterday (11)
I just can’t talk about it now. It’s so stunning and unbelievable. I couldn’t believe what I was reading coming across the TV screen. My heart goes out to Cissy, her daughter Bobbi Kris, her family and Bobby.
Mariah Carey, who teamed up with Houston to record the 1998 track ‘When You Believe’, posted on Twitter: “Heartbroken and in tears over the shocking death of my friend, the incomparable Ms. Whitney Houston.” In a separate post, she later added: “She will never be forgotten as one of the greatest voices to ever grace the earth.”
Rihanna said: “No words! Just tears #DearWhitney,” while Katy Perry wrote: “So devastating. We will always love you Whitney, R.I.P.” Rapper Nicki Minaj, meanwhile, commented: “Jesus Christ, not Whitney Houston. Greatest of all time.”
According to The Associated Press, Houston’s ex-husband Bobby Brown paid tribute to the singer from the stage of his concert in Southaven, Mississippi just hours after her death. He told the crowd: “First of all, I want to tell you that I love you all. Second, I would like to say, ‘I love you, Whitney.’ The hardest thing for me to do is to come on this stage.”
Elton John also paid his respects to Houston onstage during his show at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas, commenting: “This is a sad day today, all I want to talk about is her music. She was the most beautiful woman I think I ever saw… Thank you for giving us your talent, and one of the most beautiful voices I’ve ever heard.”
The cause of Houston’s death has not yet been disclosed, although US gossip site TMZ has claimed prescription drugs were present in the room and it was possible the 48-year-old drowned in the bath.
