Wu-Tang Clan members team up for documentary about Raekwon’s solo album

Fan-funded film will tell the story of Raekwon's classic 1995 debut solo album 'Only Built 4 Cuban Linx'

Wu-Tang Clan members Raekwon and Ghostface Killah are teaming up to make a documentary about Raekwon’s classic debut solo album ‘Only Built 4 Cuban Linx’.

Titled Purple Tape Files, the documentary will be funded by fans through the FanBacked.com website, which Raekwon believes will lead to a candid look at the album’s creation and its subsequent influence on music. Released in 1995, ‘Only Built 4 Cuban Linx’ peaked at Number Four on the US Billboard 200 albums chart and is considered one of the greatest hip-hop albums of all time.

Explaining why he and Ghostface Killah have decided to make the film a fan-funded project, Raekwon told Complex: “We wanted to do it organic – not having somebody come in and tell us what they think we should do.”

Raekwon also explained that the project has no specific fundraising target, saying: “It’s just all about the participation, no number. It’s just about people getting involved and really showing us that, ‘You know what? I care about this legendary album’.”

Fans can sign up to receive information about Purple Tape Files, which will be released to mark the 20th anniversary of ‘Only Built 4 Cuban Linx’, here.

Last month (December) Wu-Tang Clan announced a pair of UK live dates set to take place this June. The rap collective will play London’s O2 Academy Brixton on June 4 before taking to the stage at Glasgow’s O2 Academy on June 5.
