Former boy band star picked up the New Artist of the Year award last night

Zayn Malik made reference to his former boy band One Direction when picking up the New Artist of the Year award at last night’s American Music Awards (AMAs).

The AMAs took place in Los Angeles, with Justin Bieber, Ariana Grande and Drake among the other big winners on the night. See the full winners list here.

Picking up his award, Malik said: “This one just has my name on it, right?” Watch that quip in the video below.

He went on to add: “I can’t thank the people that have been with me every day the past year enough. Being stood on this stage is crazy. My mum, my dad, everybody in my family that’s been supporting me the past year, especially my dad. Thank you, Dad.”

“Also, big, big thank you to you guys. I didn’t expect anybody to still vote for me. So thank you, and I’ll put [the award] on my fireplace”.

Malik later tweeted a photo from the event, along with the caption: “We did it guys!”

Performers at the AMAs included Malik’s ex 1D bandmate Niall Horan, as well as Justin Bieber, Ariana Grande, Nicki Minaj, Lady Gaga, Sting, Bruno Mars, The Weeknd and The Chainsmokers. See footage from all the performances.

During their performance of recent single ‘Bang Bang’, Green Day led an anti-Trump rant. Frontman Billie Joe Armstrong chanted: “No Trump! No KKK! No fascist USA!”
