Zola Jesus: ‘I love the new Britney Spears record’

The pop princess finds an unlikely fan in the gothic songstress

Zola Jesus has spoken out about her love of Britney Spears and her latest album ‘Femme Fatale’.

However, the singer, real name Nika Roza Danilova, also said she was disappointed in Spears for not using her fame to sell a more powerful message. Jesus revealed:

I love the new Britney Spears record yet at the same time it’s the most mindless album I’ve ever heard. It’s really bad because she has so much potential to reach millions of people and say something that’s really interesting. She could sell a revolution if she wanted, you know? But she doesn’t, and that bums me out.

In an in interview with Contact Music, Jesus added that she didn’t want to produce the same kind of ‘escapism’ in her own music, saying: “If I can insert some sort of enlightenment into the music maybe people can get more out of it for themselves and not just something to have fun and dance to.”

The singer, who releases her third album ‘Conatus’ on September 26, will play in the UK capital’s Toynbee Hall on the day of the album’s release.

The Los Angeles-based solo artist’s third album – her second official release in the UK – features cello, double bass, violin and viola, and was produced by Brian Foote and Zola Jesus herself. ‘Conatus’ is the follow-up to her 2010 album ‘Stridulum II’.

The singer will play both Bestival and End Of The Road Festival in September.
