Band offer condolences to Hannah Bond's family and say they are 'anti-suicide'

My Chemical Romance have spoken out about the suicide of Hannah Bond, the 13 year-old fan of the band from Kent who recently hanged herself.

At a hearing about her death coroner Roger Sykes suggested that Hannah Bond’s suicide was linked in with her apparent obsession with emo music, saying that he found the overtones of the genre "disturbing".

Writing on Mychemicalromance.com, the band offered their condolences to Bond's family. They went on to say that as a band they were "anti-suicide", and that one of their aims was to provide "comfort, support and solace" to their fans.

The message read: "We have recently learned of the suicide and tragic loss of Hannah Bond. We'd like to send our condolences to her family during this time of mourning. Our hearts and thoughts are with them.

"My Chemical Romance are and always have been vocally anti-violence and anti-suicide. As a band, we have always made it one of our missions through our actions to provide comfort, support, and solace to our fans.

"The message and theme of our album 'The Black Parade' is hope and courage. Our lyrics are about finding the strength to keep living through pain and hard times. The last song on our album states: 'I am not afraid to keep on living' – a sentiment that embodies the band's position on hardships we all face as human beings.

"If you or anyone that you know have feelings of depression or suicide, we urge you to find your way and your voice to deal with these feelings positively."

The statement comes roughly a week before My Chemical Romance fans plan to march in protest against the media's depiction of the band.

The march will begin in Hyde Park in London on Saturday (May 31) and end outside the offices of the Daily Mail newspaper. Organisers are hoping that the My Chemical Romance protest march will attract around 1,000 supporters.

as compared to what? pro-suicide? all i know is that hearing their "music" makes me want to shoot myself, so they're obviously not doing a good job to combat suicide.

yea that is yoohr opinion and yooh may not like MCR's style of music and that is fair enough that is an easily solved problem... don't listen to it! But for people that do enjoy their music and are going through hard times it does help it makes things that little be easier but when lies like this come out in the newpapers about something that yooh love and aspire to it can really hurt yooh. For fans that look up to them they will listen to what they have got to say they will know that they arn't a band wanting to make all their fans kill themselves they are hear to give people a voice and i think this march is a fantastic oppertunity for us their fans to repay them for their music and words of advice. Also people wouldn't just kill themselves because of the music they listen to it has to be something deeper like being bullied or other issues.MCR

I really don't think being flippant like that is useful, either to the family of Hannah Bond or to a band who completely unjustifiably have been linked to a tragic death they couldn't possibly have had anything to do. It is both immoral and irresponsible to suggest otherwise.

Have you heard the news that you're dead?No one ever had much nice to sayI think they never liked you anywayOh take me from the hospital bedWouldn't it be grand? It ain't exactly what you planned. And wouldn't it be great If we were dead?Ohh dead.Wow, Anti-Suicide Indeed.

they made this girl commit suicide so their anti suicide approach isnt working shouldnt they just stop making 'music'

Well actually, if you liked the band then you would know the actual meanings too the song. Instead you just go and be a stereo-typical dickhead! x

See, regarless of what you think of MCR or what you think their message is - a song does not make someone kill themselves. Music may be used as an excuse or a scapegoat (the same charge being levelled at Judus Priest in the eighties.) It's window dressing.

I don't think that My Chemical Romance are deliberately encouraging people to commit suicide/self harm but I think that their music often appeals to younger people who might read more into their lyrics than they originally intended, and often some people who like MCR might be people who the whole (I use this word loosely) "emo" image appeals to and often think that to be part of this sub culture have to do stuff like wear black eyeliner and self harm, so maybe they alter their image to look "emo" and start self harming to appear "emo" and Listen to MCR because its "emo". Which means that the problem might not be "emo" music, but the fact that young people feel as if they have fit in to cliques, and unfortunately there is very little anyone can do to stop this. Which is quite sad really.

*They* never made this girl commit suicide. Do you even know what the hell was going on her life? or are you just taking the Daily Shit Mails' word for it? Thought so. You have no bloody idea, so quit making false accusations.

My Chemical Romance saved many lives and they sure do not try to kill people. One band isnt going to make a girl go out and kill herself. Everyone knows that there are more things in life that can cause an adolesence to end her life. Parents, peers, tv, etc. And she started listening to them 2 weeks before her death. 2 weeks of listening to 1 band isnt going to confirm herself into her death. My Chem has been in this poor girls train of thought. They sing about the bad times and hope the fans will listen to their words, "I am not afraid to keep on LIVING." Its not right to go out and blame ONE THING on something as serious as this. It sounds like "my dog ate my homework". You people are just trying to find an excuse and try to make it sound like this is the one thing. Its not. Theres also a book on MCR called "This Band Will Save Your Life". Dont blame one band on her death. One band isnt going to cause something as serious as death.

You have no idea what kind of band they are unless you listen to them. I know people who have killed themselves and they didnt even listen to this band. Emo is what people have called someone when thay cut or just for the way we dress. I am sorry for the family and I am glad that MCR is saying to the family that they are sorry and are passing on that they will help anyway that they can. People though are over acting in what EMO is. Get your facts right.Piece Out emogirl123

Any body who claims that a band is able to make someone commet suicide is niave and igronant. If some hits the ultimate low that they feel death is the best option than the music they listen too is the last thing on there minds. For all of you who are fortunate to of never of suffered from deperssion, who have never had suiciadal thoughts enter there heads, i can only say you have no right to comment on something you will NEVER understand. Personaly i do find solace in MCR lyrics. The theme on the latest album makes me think there are people and famielys dealing with bigger issues than what's going on in my head. i dont have cancer or other problems on such a scale and nobody here knew hannah so how dare you be so flippant about her problems you presume this one band defined her life. MCR are just a band. Even at 13 people realise that. There are many issues within society that need takling, knife crime and the increasing gap between rich and poor are exsamples, expression of fears and emmotion through music are not. If anything, although i'm not a fan of emo, it should be encouaged, because this country has a problem with the youth having a voice and its not emo encouraging suicide and its not everyone in a hood encouraging voilence

"Have you heard the news that you're dead?No one ever had much nice to sayI think they never liked you anywayOh take me from the hospital bedWouldn't it be grand? It ain't exactly what you planned. And wouldn't it be great If we were dead?Ohh dead.Wow, Anti-Suicide Indeed."These lyrics were taken out of context; the whole album is about people trying to deal with death in different ways. If you really listened, you would notice the sarcastic tone of the song. The whole album tells a story via various 'characters'. It does not tell people to commit suicide. I know from personal experience that something has to be very wrong with a person for them to even attempt something like suicide. Blaming a genre of music or a band is too simplistic. No one "made this girl commit suicide". The poor girl had so many things to deal with and felt like she could not reach out to anyone: MCR wasn't causing her problems. How could they be responsible? My heart goes out to her family and friends; and I wonder what they think about all this speculation and blaming.

OMG... get over yourself, its just so easy to blame someone else... that girls death, is one of the saddest things to have happened.. her family is in pain and so is her friends.. and all people and media can do is blame 'EMO' music and My Chemical Romance... there music in mi opion is Great !!!!! and if you dont like em thats great for you.. Muisc is music. theres no hidden ' go kill yourself message in it.. and if there was why cant you say "go pop someone in the head" is the result of rap music... yer thats wat i thought think about it!!!!

MCR should still make music! they help me every day to keep me sane, without them for the past 3 year, would have been HELL, I don't know what would have happen! Those 5 guys make me happy, they music fits. I know that they wont me to be the best I can be or even better I know this!If only 13 year old Hannah go that, if only she could have heard one of them tell her, every thing is going to be alright and stop cuting,It doesn't help!!If only someone she loved tolted her that, maybe she thought she was not loved, if she only know her inpack she made.IF ONLY!!

Gingerboosh, dont be an arse mate. I hate my chemical romance, but i think that this is blatent evidence that the media will find somebody to blame for everything. The girl probably had a few drinks in her lifetime aswell im surprised the headline "BINGE DRINKING TEEN" didnt appear somewhere in the articles.

Fuck off MCR haters. MCR are amazingly good especially their latest album. I can understand the people who dont like teenagers and cancer, myself i dont love them. But the whole album is brilliant and you won't find many better bands than My Chemical Romance

FUCK YOU: gingerboosh, pete101, and jbhitter24!!!! you have no idea what u r talking about. Their lyrics have deeper meanings if u just listen to them. THEY ARE ALL METAPHORS, as music should be. ALL OF U R PISSING ME OFF!!!! try watching their dvds and then maybe u will have some kind of clue as to what they r about. Stop talking shit and stop blaming them IT WASNT THEIR FAULT!!! if u have been a fan of them since the beginning then u probly know what im talking about. let me give a bit of advice to all u losers: watch the "Life on the Murder Scene" video diary and GET A FUCKING CLUE!!!!!!!!! I love u MCR and i know it wasn't ur fault. i just cant get all of theses other losers to believe me.

No one pay attention to the negative comments, they are from Encyclopedia Dramatica and are trolling any MCR site they can find to bring the protest down. They do their research eg. the guy "pete101" who knew the lyrics to 'Dead!'Anyhow, I think this is a perfectly worded statement from the guys, and I am proud of them

If you listen to MCR's Black Parade album as a whole, it is very easily seen as a reach to help people; to give them courage and hope. If you only look to certain parts, of course it will be misunderstood. its like reading a book, only one chapter makes no sense. but if you read the book, it makes all the sense. I feel very sorry for the Bond's loss, but they musn't put the blame on people hardly even affiliated with the young girl. I am a very faithful fan of MCR and they really have done nothing but be hopeful, courage-givers. in fact, Famous last words is one of my favorite songs ever. it inspires me to "keep on living!"

theeggster

May 26, 2008

Even if a so called band like Take That dressed in black with make-up Chemical Romance write songs about killing yourself there is no way they should be blamed for any ones death. The parents should be blamed 100% for their upbringing not some silly lame suicide pop wank.

adrianalovesthemcr

May 26, 2008

oh thats all bull shit no one can make anyone do anything and like the person who said 4 comments up if you don't like the fucking music then don't listen to it more power to us! and i mean no disrespect to the family of this child but how the fuck can you blame someones dealth over some music. people take all this shit way out of concept......all who oppose mychem can go to hell! who the fuck gives you the wright to judge none of ya'll aint even that important......let the band do their thing and ya'll do yours! all i have to say is mychem keep on fuckin rockin!!!!!and don't give a fuck about what others say!

They will never stop making music because they have changed lives of all their fans, gingerboosh!!!!!!!!!! You know what? You sound just like my father and that isn't a compliment, he's the weirdest person I've ever met!! You wouldn't know good music if it looked you in the eye. What band has changed your life, huh? I bet it is some crap like beach boys! What emotional situation do they sing about, losing a girlfriend? MCR sings about losing life NOT SUICIDE but murder or cancer or anythiing but suicide!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! So all you haters stop thinking bad, they mean all good, trust me.

May 26, 2008

I dont like MCR, lets get that straight. But I love music, and I know that there are people who love their music, as much as I love my favorite bands music. The thing I hate is that music is an easy target. Any time something happens, if there is even the slightest musical connotation, then there is an easy scapegoat. A goth does something, its because of their music- the devil has brought it on. A punk does something - they are listening to the sounds of rebellion. Heck some even listen to the devil if played backwards! In all seriousness, This girl was obviously troubled, and music is the easy way out for parents/people who should have took an interest in a 13 year olds life. Its always been a way of absolving all blame from people who could have helped: the music did it! the same music that helps many people get over their troublesI wish people could take responsibililty for each other and realise that music can help, not kill.

ILOVEMCR94

May 26, 2008

Sure MCR have made peolple suicidal thats because they listen to the music in the wrong way. I LOVe MCR and i think im a very happy person i love life. But MCR have also saved much more lives than theyve killed. When people who hate MCR post crap about them they choose the worse lines. Its the way people want to look at the music. I hate it how people look at one lyric and go thats it, theyre talking about death theyre wanting people to kill themselves. Because thast soo wrong. They also talk about living life to the fullest and not giving up which i think is very un-suicidal.And those people who are in the cult group the Black Parade are giving MCR a bad name they are the bad fans becasue as MCR said The Black Parade is about hope and courage not having to kill themselves. this has just been blown out of porportion. If i was in London i would be marching with the other fans becasue MCR are a band that want to save lives not destroy them as the media keep telling the public. MCR dont deserve to be treated this way. Theyre being judged for there irresponsible fan actions. Its just so Wrong!!!!! :(

May 26, 2008

i listen to music like R.E.M, Radiohead, Placebo which all my mates slag off as being "depressing" but im also a fan of My Chemical Romance. At the risk of repeating everybody else it takes more than a few songs to make somebody kill herself, even if they are gloomy, and its unfortunate that such a good band has been scapegoated. thing is, if you live in london why not march anyway. not for My Chemical Romance or for "emos" but to support this girls family and speak out agains the racist, bullying piece of rubbish that is the Daily Mail

ed2005

May 26, 2008

I am fed-up with seeing people being scapegoated, There is no way this band can be held responsible. Depression is a horrible illness to have, and anyone who suffers from it needs help. Many emo-kids -or people who are perceived to be, are scapegoated and villified, simply because of the way they dress. It's time that the real root causes are addressed: was she being picked on at school? Were her family properly supportive? Time to investigate properly. Anyone who leaves poisonous threads or postings on here should be kicked off. I'm not into MCR particularly, but as a teacher i am sick to the back teeth of seeing people villified for daring to be different.

Jertum

May 26, 2008

I don't believe mcr are totally responsible, but emo music does promote a, shall we say, 'alternative' way of life. It always seems to me that emo bands tend to dabble in things that they don't understand and so give off the wrong messages in their lyrics.

Just look at these videos:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kBZvQPIPV0Yhttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3J_8eHeMWUcReally, emos are doing this, of course they are going to demonstrate how suicidal they are ...

To be honest this wole thing has nothing to do with music - nobody has a clue what was going through hannah's mind when she did what she did so its impossible to try and justify her actions by blaming it on music or as some people have guessed her parents - the only messages that should be being viewed on this site are those of condolances to the family and friends of this girl!

AdamShanklyUK

May 27, 2008

Erm, just copied and pasted a comment from one of the links posted above by Hurric... this is real ad verbatim...."I love the MCR. They speak to the pain that I feel inside, because no one understands. No one. I will be killing myself on May 31st to show the Daily Mail how real emoism really is."Whatever your opinion of MCR, it's irrelevant to some pretty disturbing feelings that are running rife amongst many people my age (no I'm not emo by the way). But this is seriously disturbing and I hope to god someone will comeforward to help this individual, or at least, I hope they aren't being serious. This transcends music, this is cultural, this political, this is social. Why are young people my age feeling this way... what's driving them to do things like this?

its_rudimentary

these kids just need to get a grip...if only scallies were emo

Pandora666

May 27, 2008

My Chemical Romance is not to blame. The poor girl probably had who knows how many other problems that finally culminated. MCR is against violence and self-harm (look at the end of the 'teenagers' video). As for those wanks who are going to kill themselves, they are obviously not true MCR fans because the band is against violence.

joecoop4

May 27, 2008

crap band but they dont want to kill anyone!

adanacandy

May 27, 2008

MCR does not promote suicide. If anyone looked into the band and their music, they would know this (hint to Coronor). MCR was kind to have passed on their condolances regarding this little girls passing. Perhaps it might be time for everyone to recognize this was a tragic incident that was mistakengly related to the girl's music tastes. Ascertaining the girl's reason/s for ending her life should not have been made by the Coronor... whose job was to determine 'cause of death' not 'reason for death'. It's disapointing to see this Coronor chose such a sad road to earn some fame. To the girls parents and family: So sorry for your loss, it must be extremely painful to have all of this going on while you grieve. From an MCR fan who cares. Andy from Edmonton.

vonman

May 27, 2008

You know, if they are wanting to be anti-suicide, why do they have to style themselves around a genre that is seen as stereotyped or not a bit dark, loosely based on goth, punk and dare I say rock which are always about hurt and pain. Why don't they dress up as the tellytubbies if their anti-suicide claims are to be taken a bit more seriously?!?!?!

Rory426

May 27, 2008

How would anyone dressed as a tellytubby be taken seriously?Their style didn't kill anyone, and it's a desperate attempt to find blaim for a young girl's death, which is understandable but a very unfair conclusion.

galiieh*be*hell

May 30, 2008

Guys. . .please. Don't blame my chemical romance for all. It's not all their fault. It's not hannah fault either. She was just a young girl and misunderstand about the meaning, i mean the real meaning of mcr's songs. She was just too young to understand mcr's great songs, she just need more time.

hazardblame

Jun 1, 2008

Not only is suggesting that it's MCR's fault that Hannah committed suicide unfair, but it's also unfair suggesting that all emo's are suicidal and self destructive. I don't think you have to want to kill yourself to be emo, and I don't think people should always assume that if someone's suicidal, them being emo is the answer. It goes deeper than that. Problems don't start from the music you listen to or the clothes you wear. It's sad when people who become emo start hurting themselves because they think that that's what emo's do. it's not true.
