My Chemical Romance fans set for emo protest today (May 31)

My Chemical Romance fans are staging a march today (May 31) in London to protest against claims the emo genre is a suicide cult.

Fans will head to the offices of the Daily Mail, the British newspaper that attacked the genre in the aftermath of the suicide of Hannah Bond, a fan of the band.

The paper claimed "no child is safe from the sinister cult of emo" after the coroner at Bond's inquest criticised the genre's influence in her death.

It followed an article in 2006 which erroneously linked emo with the goth scene and included claims that fans of the genre were self-harmers.

However both music fans and My Chemical Romance themselves have hit back insisting emo and the band's music is not intrinsically linked with suicide.

Along with today's march, fans are also expected to hold a 12 hour vigil in Hyde Park.

NME.COM will bring you coverage from today's protest as it happens.

The attack on emo in the UK comes on the heels of the persecution of Mexican fans of the genre. There rock fans have physically attacked so-called emo kids.

Not a big fan of emo myself, but for it to get this sort of treatment is harsh to say the least. This 'coroner' and the Daily Mail are the sorts of people that say Grand Theft Auto causes people to kill other people Its the people themselves that have the issues. To merely link it to something and aportion blame is a joke.

pretty embarrassing that people think MCR are "emo" and not just a little pop music fad for disgruntled teenagers.

i have to acree with MiiChemicalRomance's comment above, because it's te same for me. however, gd1984, it isnt a "fad" as you put it. it's just a subcult to alot of different music styles, and although everyone thinks it'll go out of fasion really quickly, it's still growing :)im happy as an emo kid, just like all of my friends.MCR ROCKS
