Movie is set for release on December 18
The official Star Wars Instagram account has posted exclusive new footage from the forthcoming latest installment in the franchise, The Force Awakens. Scroll down to watch.
The clip, which is less than 10 seconds long, shows another angle of a scene previously revealed in trailers, wherein an army of Stormtroopers are gathered at a Nazi-esque rally. We then see a concerned looking Rey (Daisy Ridley) while the droid BB-8 sits in the background.
Next is a previously-seen shot of Adam Driver’s Kylo Ren wielding his controversial crossguard lightsaber before new footage reveals him to be squaring off against former Stormtrooper Finn (John Boyega), who holds up a blue lightsaber reminiscent of Luke Skywalker’s weapon in the original trilogy.
The video takes advantage of Instagram’s new cinematic video. The photo-sharing app announced today that, in addition to square posts, users can now post photos and videos in both portrait and landscape orientation
In a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly, the film’s director, JJ Abrams, revealed that his motivations in taking on the franchise was the opportunity to answer the question, “Who is Luke Skywalker?”.
“You rarely get a chance to be involved in something that you would typically be an audience for,” he said. “Katie, my wife, said, ‘If you want to do this and you don’t, you’re going to regret this.’ It was really about being willing to take that leap, and jump into the possibilities of what these characters are doing, and where they are.”
Star Wars: The Force Awakens is set for release on December 18 and takes place 30 years after the events of Return Of The Jedi. The film’s script was penned by Abrams, Toy Story 3 writer Michael Arndt and Star Wars franchise veteran Lawrence Kasdan.
Meanwhile, Lucasfilm is also working on a series of Star Wars spin-off films which it has titled the ‘Anthology Series’. The first spin-off, Rogue One starring Felicity Jones, will arrive on December 16, 2016.
A second spin-off film focusing on the origins of Harrison Ford’s iconic character Han Solo, was announced last month. The currently untitled film is set for release on May 25, 2018.
