Nick Cave has said that an incident in which he crashed his car into a speed camera made him a "local hero" in his adopted home city of Brighton.

Cave referred to the 2010 accident in a new interview with The Sun. Claiming he was the "toast of Brighton" following the accident, he said: "I became a local hero, I took out the camera along the sea front with my Jag. I was the toast of Brighton for about five days. Little goths came and prayed at the scene and wrote, 'Nick Cave was here'."

Cave references his punishment on 'Mermaids', a track which features on the new Nick Cave and The Bad Seeds album. Talking about his time at a driver alertness course, the Australian frontman admitted he was a fan of the classes. "It was really rehab for drivers and there was that kind of shameful look about the people there."

The singer and his twin sons were driving in his Jaguar car which he crashed into a speed camera in December 2010. All involved walked away from the crash unharmed.

Meanwhile, Nick Cave And The Bad Seeds have announced plans for a European tour later this year in support of new album 'Push Away The Sky'.

In the UK, Nick Cave And The Bad Seeds will play:

London Hammersmith Apollo (October 26, 27)
Manchester Apollo (30)
Glasgow Barrowland (31)
Edinburgh Usher Hall (November 1)
