Nicki Minaj has said that her controversial performance at the Grammy Awards ceremony on Sunday (February 12) was actually a scene from a movie she's written.

The rapper arrived at the event wearing a red Versace nun's habit, accompanied by an older man dressed as the Pope. She then performed her tracks 'Roman's Holiday' and 'Roman's Revenge' as part of a lengthy scene, which included an exorcism.

Speaking to the Associated Press about the performance, Minaj said: "You know how people write plays and movies? That's what I did. I wrote that and I gave the world a tiny little preview of what was to come. And so I have to perform it on the set in which it would be in the movie, right?"

The singer also said that she didn't understand why her performance had drawn so much heat, with the Catholic League among those who criticised her, calling her show "tasteless and disrespectful to the Catholic Church".

Asked if she could understand the reaction the show had caused, she replied: "I don't know, what is the big issue?"

Minaj is set to release her new album 'Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded' on April 3. The latest single from the album 'Starships' was debuted online earlier this week.
