Nirvana bassist ends protest candidacy

'I made my point crystal clear,' says Krist Novoselic

Nirvana's former bassist Krist Novoselic has announced that he has ended his candidacy for public office to protest Washington state's election methods.

Novoselic began his campaign earlier this month, running for the office of county clerk in Wahkiakum County as a member of the "Grange Party" - a party that doesn't actually exist - in order to bring attention to the state's policies of allowing candidates to name their own party affiliation.

The star has now said that he has made his point, and is therefore pulling out of the race. In a posting in his blog for the Seattle Weekly on Friday (June 12), Novoselic wrote: "My protest is over. I've officially withdrawn from the Wahkiakum County clerk race.

The worst thing you can call me is a crusader. I'm not a crusader, I'm just trying to make a point. And I think I made it crystal clear: It's wrong for me to drag a private association unwittingly onto the public ballot."

The politically active bassist currently serves as chairman of the Wahkiakum County Democratic Party.
