An exhibition about Nirvana is set to open in Seattle.

Nirvana: Taking Punk To The Masses will be housed at the Experience Music Project from April 16, 2011 until April 22, 2013.

The collection will feature a number of rare artefacts, including one of Kurt Cobain's never-before-exhibited paintings from high school, handwritten lyrics of the songs 'Spank Thru' and 'Floyd The Barber', plus pieces of the first guitar the frontman ever destroyed onstage.

"[Cobain] was a visionary artist who touched people all over the world," Krist Novoselic, the band's bassist and co-founder said in a statement. "It's great that there will soon be a collection that celebrates that contribution to music and culture."

"There's a story with Nirvana at its centre," he continued. "But it's a story that also includes the many people, bands and institutions that make up a music community. The show is a celebration of Northwest music."

Other pieces of memorabilia set to feature in the collection also include the now famous cardigan often worn by Cobain in the early 1990s and the winged angel stage prop featured on Nirvana's 'In Utero' tour.
