Nirvana frontman discusses his sexuality and school days in interview

The resulting video, which you can watch above, is part of PBS' Blank on Blank series, in which old audio interviews with iconic figures are dug out of the archives. Other recent interviews in the series have included Louis Armstrong, Jim Morrison and Wilt Chamberlain.

Nirvana frontman Cobain's animation is based on 1993 interview recorded on cassette tape. In the interview Cobain discusses his school days, saying: "You know, I felt so different and so crazy that people just left me alone. I always felt that they would vote me 'Most likely to kill everyone at a high school dance.'" He also reveals that he thought he was gay as a child. "I even thought that I was gay. I thought that might be the solution to my problem."

The interview with Cobain is the latest treat for Nirvana fans following the online publication of rare interviews with the band made between 1990 and 1992 by then Metal Hammer journalist James Sherry emerged online earlier this year. The three interviews were originally released on CD in 2004 and see the grunge band speak about their growing success, signing to a major label and their classic album 'Nevermind'.

Earlier this year, Nirvana’s 1993 album 'In Utero' was reissued to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the record. The package features B-sides, demos and live tracks, plus unreleased bonus material.
