The Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame has officially announced its inductees for 2014.

Following the committee vote, Nirvana, Kiss, Peter Gabriel, Hall And Oates, Cat Stevens and Linda Ronstadt will be inducted, while The E Street Band will be given the Award For Musical Excellence. Artists are eligible for induction 25 years after the release of their first record, meaning Nirvana, who released debut album 'Bleach' in 1989, have been nominated at the first possible opportunity.

The svengalis behind The Beatles and The Rolling Stones will also be honoured, with the late Brian Epstein and Andrew Loog Oldham sharing the Ahmet Ertegun Award for non-performers.

Nominees who did not make the cut in the vote for induction include The Paul Butterfield Blues Band, Chic, Deep Purple, LL Cool J, The Meters, NWA, The Replacements, Link Wray, Yes and The Zombies.

The induction ceremony is due to take place at Brooklyn's Barclays Center on April 10th, 2014, and tickets go on sale to the general public in January. It could be an awkward one for Kiss and the surviving members of Nirvana: in October, Kiss leader Gene Simmons said that artists like Kurt Cobain and Amy Winehouse, who only released a couple of albums, cannot be seen as music icons. He said: "Kurt Cobain - no, that's one or two records, that's not enough. Amy Winehouse - that's one or two records, that's not enough. What, just 'cause you died that makes you an icon? No, no."

If Dave Grohl turns up to collect the honour on behalf of Nirvana, it will be his second on-stage appearance at the Hall Of Fame induction in a row – in 2013, he and fellow Foo Fighter Taylor Hawkins took to the stage to induct Rush. "When the fuck did Rush become cool?!" Grohl joked in his speech to huge cheers. "Who let the fucking drummer write the lyrics?! Rush did. Makes no sense!"
