'Nirvana Day' declared in Washington city

The celebration in Hoquiam will take place as Nirvana are inducted in the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame

The city of Hoquiam in the North American state of Washington has said that April 10, 2014 will be 'Nirvana Day'.

Nirvana frontman Kurt Cobain once lived in Hoquiam, and the town is only four miles from Cobain's hometown of Aberdeen. The day will honour Nirvana's induction into the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame, which also takes place on April 10 of next year, reports Consequence of Sound. Mayor Jack Durney spoke about 'Nirvana Day' to local radio station KXRO, commenting: "They bring great honor, I think as I say, to our entire community. And I think that it's good Kurt Cobain lived in Hoquiam for a little while, but he and Krist Novoselic are part of our community, and I think it's good to honor our sons and their great accomplishments."

Following the committee vote, Nirvana, Kiss, Peter Gabriel, Hall And Oates, Cat Stevens and Linda Ronstadt will be inducted into the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame next year, while The E Street Band will be given the Award For Musical Excellence. Artists are eligible for induction 25 years after the release of their first record, meaning Nirvana, who released debut album 'Bleach' in 1989, were nominated at the first possible opportunity.

The svengalis behind The Beatles and The Rolling Stones will also be honoured, with the late Brian Epstein and Andrew Loog Oldham sharing the Ahmet Ertegun Award for non-performers. The induction ceremony is due to take place at Brooklyn's Barclays Center.
