Shockwaves NME Awards Tour continues in Bristol despite poorly Ting Tings

Band provide novel cover after frontwoman ruled out by flu

The Bristol leg of the Shockwaves NME Awards Tour 2008 took place at the Bristol Carling Academy last night (February 19) despite one of the band's falling victim to illness.

The Ting Tings had to drop out due to frontwoman Katie White catching flu and being forced to spend the evening "shivering in her hotel room".

Instead the band's drummer Jules De Martino DJed a set using seven-inch records donated to the band by fans during the tour.

Following the unexpected opening, The Cribs, Joe Lean and the Jing Jang Jong and Does It Offend You, Yeah? all performed as usual.

Does It Offend You, Yeah? stole the show from the very start, with their rock/dance mash-up receiving a very lively seal of approval from the audience.

The band played with a huge amount of energy and enjoyment, and the crowd went crazy for epic track 'Battle Royale' and new single 'We Are Rockstars'.

Following a dramatic intro, Joe Lean and the Jing Jang Jong followed with an indie set of polished, catchy tunes.

The inevitably single 'Lucio Starts Fires' went down a treat with the crowd, as did the 'In Competition' and new single 'Lonely Buoy'.

Dependable as ever, The Cribs then rounded off the night with a great performance.

Storming on stage with 'Don't You Wanna Be Relevant?' and running through a stash of pop gems from across their three albums, the band meant business.

The band covered The Smiths' classic 'Panic', where they were joined on stage by the legendary band's guitarist Johnny Marr himself.

A vigorous rendition of 'Hey Scenesters!' then saw the newly bolstered four-piece end the night on a high as moshpit expanded to take up the whole venue.
