Band will be honoured at first US NME Awards

Jane's Addiction are set to be named Godlike Geniuses at the US NME Awards.

Members of the legendary band will come together to receive the award at the ceremony on April 23, which will be held at Los Angeles' Goldenvoice El Rey Theatre.

“When we were in the planning stages of bringing the NME Awards to America, Jane's Addiction were always in our thoughts," explained NME Editor Conor McNicholas of the award. "They are exactly the sort of once-in-a-lifetime, inspirational, aspirational, no-holds-barred, genre-busting, risk-taking, pioneering group which sums up what the NME Awards is all about.

"Breathtaking live, phenomenal on record, they blazed a trail for alternative music from which others have truly benefited over the past 20 years, and it is with the very greatest pleasure that we acknowledge and honour their contribution to making music which makes the world a better, more exciting place to live in."

Jane's Addiction are joining the likes of The Clash, New Order, Primal Scream and Manic Street Preachers, who are among the acts to have picked up the Godlike Genius prize at the UK awards.

NME has decided to give the band the award this year – the first time the awards are being held in the US – to recognise the fact that Jane's Addiction have done more than any other band to introduce American alternative music to the mainstream, founding the touring Lollapalooza Festival and giving what frontman Perry Farrell refers to as the "alternative nation" a real cultural focus and voice.

I love Jane's Addiction! Very well deserved lads! I've been a fan since they started out and have missed them...would love to witness a reunion! It's good to see them being recognised with this award...

Looking forward to hearing all about it! Jane's A are one of my all time faves and i'd love to witness them all together again, in the same place at the same time - if that's possible...

Janes Addiction were an important band but the reformed model were terrible. I saw them at Reading in 2002 and they trampled on their reputation - if they reform again for this they can surely only do more damage.

GOOD CHOICE. Jane's were genius. One of the few bands that were just as good live as on record. Easily the best thing to come out of LA in the Eighties. I hope Eric Avery will join them to pick up the award (though I'm not counting on it. I heard he hasn't spoken to Perry in 15 years.) Still GOOD CHOICE!

janes addiction have a place in my collection, and it's good that they are being recognised for what they did, but i feel that the nme has missed a big opportunity to honour a more relevant band. especially as this is the first awards ceremony in the US. what the hell are you doing overlooking the pixies?

Noooooooooo, the second most overrated band ever, after Steely Dan, and just above the Chillis. Please don't do it, the godlike genius award normally goes to someone who has contributed something to music, Jane's Addiction as a band do not fit that bill, Perry even copied the traveling festival from Ian Astbury of the Cult. Again reconsider, they're simply not godlike, they're crap.

they are stoopid heads

Wow, did somebody just use Jane's in the same breath with Steely Dan? In the late 80's, Jane's would have melted your eardrums and made your heart explode. Raw, frenzied, balls-out rock and roll.

My guess is they're gonna do a full reunion with a tour. DAMN, STP and Janes Addiction....now all we need are Guns n Roses and Soundgarden.

apparently there are a few who disagree with this award. as they are clearly witches however, they should be rounded up immediately and burnt at the stake without ceremony.
