LORDS OF THE DANCE!
The first ever independent worldwide dance music awards, DANCESTAR 2000, will take place in June, and the ceremony will feature live performances from Moby, CHICANE, ARTFUL DODGER, MJ COLE and DJ LUCK & MC NEAT.

The awards, aimed at celebrating the best in all genres of dance music, will be presented at a ceremony which takes place at London's Alexandra Palace on June 1. The event will then be broadcast on Channel 4 three days later (June 4).

Amongst the 18 categories in the awards, recognition will be given for Best Chart Act, Best Newcomer, Best Album, Best Club DJ, Best Event, Best Label and Dance Star Of The Year. There is also an award for the person considered to have provided an 'Outstanding Contribution To Dance Music'.

A spokesperson for the awards told nme.com: "There are a lot of awards ceremonies, but they tend to be tied to magazines. This is the first independent awards dedicated to dance music. As a genre of music it's massive, and is crying out for a ceremony that recognises that success. We want to make it worldwide within four years, so it is as recognised as The Brit Awards are for guitar music."

A list of nominations for the awards, as judged by people within the dance music industry, will be announced via the Dancestar website, www.dancestar.net, on April 26, and then fans will be able to vote for their favourite nominations through the site.

Artists expected to receive nominations include All Saints, Aphex Twin, Chemical Brothers, Fatboy Slim, Craig David, Leftfield and Armand van Helden.
