MIA has announced she will use a recent performing fee to build schools in Liberia.
The British/Sri Lankan rapper was performing at the MTV Awards after-party in Los Angeles on Sunday night (June 1) when she reportedly climbed on top of a photo booth and told the audience she was using her $100k fee for a good cause.
"I'm going to use it to build schools in Liberia” she said "It costs $52,000 to build a school for 1,000."
The rapper, whose real name is Maya Arulpragasam, recently announced her engagement to Benjamin Brewer - guitarist and vocalist in the New York-based rock band Exit, and the son of Warner Music Group chairman and CEO Edgar Bronfman Jr.
Meanwhile, she will perform at The Party in the Garden Benefit Gala at MoMa in New York on June 10 to honor two MoMA trustee and patron of the arts Donald B. Marron, and director, writer, and producer Mike Nichols. Proceeds will benefit the museum's general operating fund. Tickets for the event start at $250.
MIA’s forthcoming show at McCarren Pool in Brooklyn on Friday (June 6) is sold out.
