Bob Dylan: 'the music industry is hypocritical rubbish'

Legend takes aim at record labels

Bob Dylan has slammed the music industry, calling it "hypocritical rubbish".

The singer/songwriter said he preferred the art and book industries, which he described as more "dignified."

Speaking to The Times, Dylan said: "The music world's a made-up bunch of hypocritical rubbish. I know that the book people are a whole lot saner. And the art world? From the small steps I've taken in it, I'd say, yeah, the people are honest, upfront and deliver what they say.

"Basically, they are who they say they are. They don't pretend. And having been in the music world most of my life I can tell you it's not that way. Let's just say it's less dignified."

Yes but when you're Bob Dylan any industry is friendly and supportive. All those industrys are the same to a new and unknown artist.

He's right - but for both books and music the more indie labels/publishers release the more interesting stuff while also being fairer to artists. the way forward for artists to get a fair deal in the music industry is through site like sellaband.com, slicethepie.com, and cherryecho.com

I think you guys have totally misunderstood what he's said.In the art and literature industries there aren't many fake artists; they paint their own pictures and write their own stories, and find their own influences. In the music industry however, we have a staggering number of 'artists' who find international success based on the work of others. Even most 'indie' bands who write their own songs and compose their own 'music' to boring and hence socially acceptable frameworks. This majority of the popular music industry, including the likes of the Kaiser Chiefs to the Pussycat dolls, claim the title of 'artists' which is the greatest injustice to to the greats of modern music.

Mr. President I don't think drgonzo destroyed anything.Dylan talks about hypocrites, not about how kindly the industry treats new or old artists. If you look at the music world, there are very few genuine, honest, deep artists around, with soul. Unfortunately, even some of them are ruined for having had to go through the meat grinder of the industry to look and sound like how they THINK the audience want them to. Let's face it, the business men are in it for the bottom line, money.
