Coldplay album set to top UK chart

'Viva La Vida..' trounces rivals - despite being out for just a day

Coldplay's new album is set to top the UK charts this Sunday (June 14) – despite only being out for three days.

'Viva La Vida Or Death And All His Friends' sold 125,000 copies on its' day of release yesterday (June 12), making it certain to top the charts ahead of The Fratellis, Neil Diamond and Paul Weller.

Music retail chain HMV are now predicting the album to sell around 250,000 copies by the time the chart is announced at 7pm on Sunday.

HMV spokesperson Gennaro Castaldo said: "This rate of sales exceeds even our optimistic forecasts, and shows how massively popular a band Coldplay remain despite having been away for the best part of three years. Aside from having a substantial core fanbase, Coldplay are one of the few acts that can genuinely connect with a much wider audience.

"While we've also been selling large quantities of the album online and as a download at hmv.com, this clearly shows that there is still a massive public appetite to buy CDs from record stores across the country. HMV placed one of its largest-ever orders in anticipation of this release."

Coldplay's last album, 2005's 'X&Y', sold 465,000 copies in its first week of release in the UK.

Massively popular... erm, no. It's just that EMI have ploughed millions into promoting this album because they're relying on its success. That's why we've been swamped by the terrible TV adverts, the interviews, the feature articles, the billboard signs etc.

Sorry 'AdamShanklyUK' but as much as you may dislike it, Coldplay are a massively popular band and this will prove to be a massively popular album. EMI can plough as much money as they like into promoting this album but if people dont like Coldplay they wont buy it. Im not a big fan of Chris Martin and co. and im certainly not a fan of the whole Rock Star trying to save the planet routine that messers Bono and Thom Yorke have flogged to death, but Coldplay make very successful easy listening music and they are very very popular

Coldplay are for people who don't really want to go looking too hard for their music. It's easy listening and doesn't challenge them too much, like a musical equivalent of Friends. You don't want to stray too far in case you bump into something with some substance, like Brass Eye. And there's not really anything wrong with that I suppose....

At the end of the day there's no denying that Coldplay are a good band, okay they're a bit annoying but anybody who doesn't think that Violet Hill is better than anything written by Kate Nash, Jack Penate, Jamie T and the Klaxons and the rest of the rubbish new wave of 'indie schmindies' is a complete moron. Coldplay make me very good easy listening music and while i wouldn't particularly want to hear a coldplay album on a night out there's a defnite genre for them and they are the Kings of Easy Listening. I'm sure if Chris Martin was a smackhead like Mr Doherty and Ms Winehouse (and many others) then he too would be a tortured genius. Don't get me wrong I think Doherty and Winehouse on form are great but sadly their lifestyles have an adverse effect on their output. Funny how people hate professionalism.....But in fairness rather than bitching about music the best thing to do if you don't like it then don't buy it and listen to itm it's quite simple then everyone can get on with their lives and we can all live happily ever after :o)

When will you dickheads learn? If you don't like Coldplay then don't comment! It's not hard to accept the fact that people actually like music that you don't! You have no divine right to tell people what they can or can't like so piss off & go listen to music you DO like.

Its an amazing album and people really don't care you don't like them and its sad in a way you go onto these posts to comment negative stuff like you do most of the time.

I do quite like coldplay and will probably buy the album, just dont feel the need to rush out. And 'AdamShanklyUK' Gazmassie is totally right, you only buy something if you like it, not because advertising tells you to, intelligent people dont anyways.

Oh look, its rudimentary commented on a Coldplay story. I don't know why you have some weird grudge against Coldplay, but sort your life out... Comparing Coldplay to the Nazis is REALLY funny. I think Scouting For Girls are wank but I don' t feel compelled to comment on all their news stories. In other news, Coldplay's new ablum is rather good

In response to its_rudimentary, I don’t believe that you can compare Coldplay to a fascist regime which ensured its control and power over Germany through fear, paranoia, and extreme anti-Semitism...... or maybe you can...Despite this I think the album is pretty good and probably deserves a number one slot, some pretty good tracks on the album such as Lost! and Life In Technicolor, despite the fact the Coldplay’s next move is to incite hatred over the Jewish community and integrate a form of the Gestapo into England.

How can you compare a band with the Nazis? Have a sense of proportion.

Having read the comments on this page and this page, I've come to the conclusion that the haters amongst you need to get out more and spend less time writing your tedious comments on these pages. Why don't you write them on the wall of a long dark tunnel on the London Underground, preferably in the path of a moving train. Can any of you idiots who slag off bands actually play in a band? If not, have a go and let's see how many records you sell.......Get a life!

Rudimentary you could go and give the album a spin , you never know you might like it but you couldnt do that cause its not cool and the nazis were not popular all over the world coldplay are fact ,selling millions doesnt mean its good but its sure dont mean its crap like you say.

So it's taken 3 days already and still not number1? If I needed new place mats I'd buy the album....but otherwise...noooo.Didn't Weller go straight in at number 1? ;-P

Mr Shankley doesn't like any bands, I've never seen him compliment anyone. For me selling millions does mean your good at what you do. I hate Westlife but there very good at producing cheesy pop covers. I love Coldplay and they are brilliant at producing there style of music. For Pete Doherty49 :) to suggest there trying to be Radiohead is laughable, Chris Martin walks over Mr Yorke for a start plus Coldplay can actually produce songs that are catchy. Brilliant album got it yesterday, wonderful band can't wait till the tour, this Oasis 7 and Franz Ferdinand 3 = Best Three albums of the year.

Jun 16, 2008

and here comes the negativity. always first to comment, last to listen. coldplay aren't in anyway my favourite band but they are a clever bunch, they write some good songs and have been a hell of a lot more succesfull in life than anyone on here which i think someone in particular may have a problem facing up to! selling millions doesn't mean its good, but it also doesn't mean that they're sell-outs. as for the word bland, seriously people, you should be ashamed of such expressionless language! come up with your own ideas!

Gazmassie... Right, at what point in my previous post did I say I dislike Coldplay? Oh, that's right, I didn't, so you're wrong.I was talking about the inevitability of the album heading to number one because it's being heavily marketted / advertised / publicised, and how EMI are relying on its success.Plus, I quite like Coldplay.Plus, I never argued that they weren't very very popular, because they are. So, what the frig's your problem? Do you want a fish to go with all those chips on your shoulders?

Why are people so pretensious to refer to Coldplay as unstimulating and easy listening?I don't understand you at all, Coldplay is best played loud. Their a rock band, they refer to themselves as very heavy soft rock. Their music has so much meaning and emotion they cannot possibly be pedestrian and unoffensive.
