Jay-Z kicks off Glastonbury set with Oasis cover

The rapper mocks Noel Gallagher's criticism of his headline slot

Jay-Z kicked off his controversial Glastonbury headline slot tonight (June 28) with an Oasis cover - hitting back at Noel Gallagher's criticism of his booking.

Before the show started, a montage of clips played, concluding with the recent interview Gallagher gave where he said the Pyramid Stage performance was "not right" for the festival.

Before a huge crowd, the superstar rapper then mimed along to Oasis' huge 1995 hit 'Wonderwall'.

Speaking earlier to Tim Westwood for Radio 1 and 1Xtra (you can watch the video interview below), Jay-Z said of the Gallagher controversy: "You know that sometimes remarks are made out of ignorance. If Noel Gallagher saw me perform and he said that then I understand that - that is a personal opinion and I have no bearing on how he feels ï¿½ you know ï¿½ it's just not your taste. But he has never seen me perform - I'm sure or else he wouldn't say that. We will see what happens after tonight!

"You know the funny thing about it with Noel and whoever else - for the most part, everyone's ready. I thought the resistance would be like an old guard versus the new guard but it's really not like that. You know, right now, every single person that I have seen, that I've encountered, that walked up to me - everyone is very excited about the show and ready for it so I feel good about it."

Jay-Z needs to grow up and let that go. Noel's message was taken out of context. Noel just thinks that Glastonbury should stay true to its roots by having mainly guitar based music. Noel thinks its a great place to go to listen to great rock bands from all over the world. Jay-z should be used to the media taking a comment and making it into something that its not. Its Noels preference to want only rock and roll at a festival that historically has been only guitar based music. You know, if a Keith Urban or The Dixie Chicks headlined a festival that historically has been rap-R&B, you all know that they would not be welcomed with open arms. Noel made a comment about his booking, boo hoo, it was just a comment about his booking. Jay-Z has made many comments about Noel. I think Jay-Z is a great artist, but he needs to grow up, not everyone wants to see him live and thats perfectly ok. We are aloud our opinions and preferences.

Seriously where has Jay-Z said anything derogratory about Noel Gallagher. Some ignorant comments are bordering on biggotry. As much of a dick Tim Westwood is i admit, he calls Jay-z hip hops "Alan Partridge". I think that kind of came across on the Jonathan Ross interview, he was charming as he always is in interviews and a damn fine gentleman. The performance at Glasto was legendary, although I was only watching on TV, I'm sorely dissapointed that I missed it this year. Noelbest - I was once an Oass fan however over the years I have come to find them seriously dull, definitely maybe was genius, wtsmg? less so - everything after that absolute dirge. Jay-Z has produced awesome albums through his entire career. Can oasis say that?.....er nope. Glastonbury is not a rock and roll festival. Its a festival of performing arts. And before anyone starts no I'm not a hip-hop fan, although there#'s a lot of awesome acts to be found if given chance as there is with any genre. So borderline biggots have you acutally listened to any of Jay-Z's albums? Hova, Hova, Hova
