Beatles' Sgt Pepper drum auctioned for £541,250

Rock memorabilia goes for four times the estimate

The bass drum used on the cover of The Beatles' landmark album 'Sgt Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band' has been sold at auction for £541,250.

The piece of rock memorabilia, emblazoned with the album's name, was auctioned at Christie's in London for four times its estimate.

A host of other rock-related lots were also up for grabs at the auction, including items owned or created by John Lennon, Jimi Hendrix and Pete Townshend.

Lennon's handwritten lyrics to his solo hit 'Give Peace A Chance' were sold for £421,250, while a recording of The Jimi Hendrix Experience's performance at 1968's Woburn Music Festival went for £48,050.

A 1967 Gibson guitar used by The Who's Pete Townshend reached a price of £32,450, while a pair of stripy flares worn by Hendrix were sold for £20,000.
