Rick Astley to be named 'Best Act Ever'?

Rickrolling reaches fever pitch for MTV Awards

Rick Astley to be named 'Best Act Ever'?

Rick Astley has been nominated as potentially the Best Act Ever as the online 'Rickrolling' phenomenon gains pace.

The '80s pop idol's 1987 Number One hit 'Never Gonna Give You Up' has been enjoying a new wave of popularity as mischievous fans have been tricking YouTube users into watching the video by posting fake tags and links.

Now the craze has stepped up a gear, as Astley finds himself nominated for Best Act Ever at this year's MTV Europe Music Awards.

Astley is up against U2, Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera, Green Day and German rockers Tokio Hotel.

Awards boss Richard Godfrey commented: "The audience has spoken and MTV has been well and truly 'Rickrolled'.

"Rick's fans have obviously decided that he deserves recognition as a pop icon, and no doubt they are determined to make sure he wins on the night."

The ceremony takes place in Liverpool at the Echo Arena on November 6.
