Last surviving Jimi Hendrix Experience member dies in Portland

Mitch Mitchell, the drummer for Jimi Hendrix Experience, was discovered dead today (November 12) in his Portland hotel room.

The 61-year-old was the last surviving member of the groundbreaking band. He had been touring the US west coast with the Experience Hendrix tour, which had made a stop in Portland.

An employee at the Benson Hotel called police after discovering Mitchell's body this morning, reports the Associated Press.

He is believed to have died of natural causes.

In addition to playing with Hendrix, Mitchell also played with other rock legends during his lengthy career, including The Rolling Stones, Eric Clapton and John Lennon.

After Hendrix's death, Mitchell finished production work on several incomplete Hendrix recordings, including 'Cry of Love' and 'Rainbow Bridge', which were released posthumously.

The British-born drummer was known for his explosive technique and pioneered a style known as "fusion", which combines jazz and rock drumming styles.

That's terribly sad news, the last living member of the Experience is gone, I was listening to Electric Ladyland last night as well, a perfect album from a perfect band. RIP.

i read the news just 2 minutes ago... i punch the table... for the people who don't know music he was just the drummer of jimi Hendrix... for the people who really knows rock n roll... he was much more ... he was the drummer of the jimi hendrix Experience...it was a BAND... so many people forget it... with Noel Redding and the impressive propulsive drumstyle of Mitch Mitchell... Hendrix will never be at this glorious place of musical history... you're free at last Mitch...and thanx

May I just say that Mitch Mitchell is/was/forever will be a DEVASTATING drummer who blows my mind everytime a Hendrix record comes on the radio, or on my stereo. The man was an influence on John Bonham and Roger Taylor and I'm sure millions more drummers. For those unfamiliar check out Crosstown Traffic for the funk or Manic Depression for the rock. Sad that the Experience are no longer of this earth. RIP Mitch Mitchell.

The world has lost one of the most talented, underrated and hugely overlooked drummers of all time.Check out any of the Experience albums and you will hear that his drumming would match anything that Keith Moon, John Bonham, etc have produced. An absolute legend. R.I.P.

Mitch was the greatest british rock drummer of all time, His feel could not be beaten, those old Hendrix records shine because of his approach. Every drummer since has borrowed from Mitch. RIP Sir, we salute you! There's one hell of a gig going down in heaven tonight.
