U2 producer talks about their new album

He says they have 'reinvented' rock n roll again

U2's producer Daniel Lanois, has spoken on about his time with the band and their new album.

Speaking to the Boston Herald Lanois said Bono's voice is sounding great and the band have "reinvented" the genre of rock 'n' roll again with the upcoming record.

He said: "The president of the company is singing better than ever and the tracks are wildly innovative. I would never have thought things would have gone this way. I believe, well, rock 'n' roll has been reinvented one more time."

Lanois also revealed why the relationship between him and U2 has continued for so long - the producer has worked on six albums, including 'The Unforgettable Fire' and 'The Joshua Tree' in 1984 and 1987.

"I like those people for their appetite for innovation. They want things to be new and fresh, and they never get stuck on how the band should sound," explained Lanois. They're very smart people. And (Brian) Eno and I just have a lot of fun with them, especially for the first 20 or 30 per cent of the record. During those first sessions, it's no-holds-barred, we take on anything that comes our way."

He added: "I also think Bono's lyrics get better with every record."

The follow-up to 2004's 'How To Dismantle An Atomic Bomb', due early next year, is strongly rumoured to be called 'No Line On The Horizon'.

The last truly great U2 record was POP. The critics destroyed them for it and they've released safe records ever since. U2 should be innovative. If the critics complain that's just too bad.

I doubt it.

Don't think U2 can be innovative... they are a band that see what style of music is popular at the time and adjust accordingly. Bono should stick to being Jesus he's quite good at solving the famine. Then he drives home in his big Bentley to his big mansion to feast on some big chicken...... Not at all ironic, well done Bono!

It's nice to see that Lanois is back behind the board...does this include Eno as well? If so, I'm definitely intrigued to hear what they've accomplished together. The last several U2 records have been extremely uninteresting, in my most humble opinion. Does Lanois really think that Bono's lyrics get better? I would say he peaked with Joshua Tree or Achtung. Since Lanois certainly knows what the band is capable of, I guess he would be one of the best gauges of how Bono and co. are going to "reinvent" the genre of rock & roll. Pardon me if I choose to remain a skeptic.

Really....what is wrong with Bono having a Bentley, a mansion, and some chicken? People that complain about others' posessions are really just jealous- think about it. If those without suddenly were with- they'd spend it too. Only question is would they also spend their time helping our world become a healthier place to live in? That is the question. Can't wait to hear new album; but why do we have to wait till AFTER Christmas-release it before xmas and your sales will double! Love ya Bono...

Bonosone, I couldn't of put it better myself. I think I have an answer to your query about the post-Christmas release of the Album of the Year 2009 (called 'No Line on the Horizon'), they are doing it for the TRUE, HARDCORE U2 fans; me, you and most of the planet. I'm sure you've read up on the boys from Dublin finding a 'rich songwriting vein'; they want to get the best out of themselves for our benefit. I hope this album will be up there with JT and AB. Peace out!

i don't think ANYONE will EVER make a record as good as Joshua Tree.
