Manic Street Preachers' Richey Edwards officially dead

Family get missing guitarist's legal status updated

Manic Street Preachers' Richey Edwards has officially been declared "presumed dead".

The guitarist went missing nearly 14 years ago, although his body has never been found.

According to the band's spokesperson, Edwards' family have obtained a court order officially changing his legal status.

They added that the matter was "hugely emotional" for the band, who along with the guitarist's family are not commenting further at this stage.

A missing person can be declared legally dead after seven years under UK law, though Edwards' parents had previously refused to take this option.

However the family’s lawyer, David Ellis, told Walesonline.co.uk that their change of heart reflected "an acceptance that his affairs have got to be sorted" and it was "not the same as an acceptance that he is dead".

Because the guitarist left no will his parents have been granted control of his estate by the court order. According to reports it is worth £455,990, although that will be reduced to £377,548 after death duties are paid.

Manic Street Preachers have continued to pay Edwards' share of band royalties despite his disappearance.

The star went missing from a hotel in central London on February 1, 1995 aged 27.

His car was found near the Severn Bridge, and it is believed Edwards took his own life, although there have been a series of alleged sightings of the guitarist around the globe since his disappearance.

As previously reported on NME.COM, the Manic Street Preachers have indicated that their next album will feature lyrics entirely written by Richey Edwards - they were left behind when he disappeared.

He may have been "Presumed dead", but to all MSP followers (or in fact musicians in general) He will always be alive in the music that he has featured. Long live his legend, rest in peace Richey x

There won't be another Richey Edwards...fiercely intelligent, polemical and a lyricist like no other. Wherever you are Richey, I hope you're at peace

I do wish you would all stop gurning about this. His lyrics were rambling nonsense. Even his bandmates didn't know what he was talking about half the time.

As a fitting tribute, could people stop printing the '4 REAL' photograph from the Lamacq interview in 1991? It's not rock'n'roll or iconic, rather it's symbolic of someone who was deeply upset, and not just about being challenged on his authenticity.

13 years is a long time for his family to wait for news, I hope they can get some sort of peace of mind and closure with this decision. The Richey era Manics was something truly special.

Almost £80k in death duties? Fucking shocking. Hard to believe that you get taxed if you die. It won't be long before babies are taxed "birth taxes" upon leaving the womb.

"According to reports [Richey's estate] is worth £455,990...Manic Street Preachers have continued to pay Edwards' share of band royalties despite his disappearance."Now, I thought the Manics were very socialist, and agreed on a 25% each, even split of all profits right from the start... So are we to believe they've made less than £2 million over their WHOLE careers??Something isn't right. Sod music; I'm off to train as an investment banker.

i'm a bit late to comment but i dont be on this a whole lot.Richey is my musical idol and i'll always repspect his contribution to the Manics music and style that i fell in love with.I'm glad his family are finally prepared to put the past behind them. but it will always itch away at me as to what really happened to him. Its something i think about almost daily. What ever really did happen to Richey?he'll forever hold a special place with me.and i'll jus hope that he either lived well or rested peacefully. i'm jus thankful for wat he did.he gave me nothing to believe in, and i thank richey

Richey's definatley still out there, just having time out, he's a very intelligent man, nutcase genius, most honest with total determination. I don't think the fame isn't all what it seems to be, with my band we're working on it's all going to be in the underground scene as I don't think it's not all worked out to be with being an easy road, which is what I've learnt from seeing what happened to him. Some can cope with the red carpet, some can't. Such is life eh. But what a fucking great time having him around even though I was too young, it must've been brilliant. BUT! Richey he's a sparkle genius, he did his work and he left which is what he said he'd do, and never bullshitted about it. The beautifulist, fragilist, still strong [as Bjork sez] and the world is a huge beautiful place with a lot of creative people away from this kind of society most of us lot live in and I think he left to find that all out for himself in an alternative existence being away from the limelight which wasn't making him happy... also being out of a routine, doing this and that as he pleases, sitting somewhere doing his thing, and that's the best thing he could've done for himself and is still doing... and hopefully and most important with someone who loves him, but still if not he's still working hard.Raw Punk I say, even though with this, I do sound a bit of a hippy... BUT I AIN'T. Hahaha :DAs he sez...Love to the most high... People are c*nts.Richey you're a star thank you for yer twinklez darling... I still dream I'll cross yer path one day Mr Bright Eyes.Much love y besitos siempre...XxINSPIRATION NOT IDOLATRY.And am thinking of Sherry, Graham, Rachel and the band tonight. All four of 'em :D Yes yes.Merry Christmas people x
