John Squire: Stone Roses reunion claims are 'unfounded'

Guitars denies Manchester band are set for tour

The Stone Roses' John Squire has denied claims that the band are planning to reform.

The guitarist was responding to reports yesterday (March 17) that the Manchester band were set to play a series of summer shows, and possibly next month's Coachella Festival.

Speaking to NME.COM, a spokesperson for Squire said he was not involved in reunion of The Stone Roses, describing the reports as "unfounded from John Squire's perspective".

They added they that they could not comment on behalf of the rest of the band, but stated: "John is not initiating a reunion or tour."

As previously reported, the timing of the claimed reunion seemed unlikely as Squire is staging a major art exhibition this summer.

The show, Squire's biggest to date, kicks off in July 5 at the Gallery Oldham, and in January the guitarist told NME.COM he would be concentrating on his art career this year.

"I've got a big show in Oldham and one in Austria and one at the end of the year in Tokyo," he said. "The Oldham show is in a major public gallery so it's a lot of work. It's the biggest show I've done."

Squire added that he didn't play guitar much these days as he was concentrating on art more.

Stone Roses frontman Ian Brown also distanced himself from the reports, stating he was concentrating on his forthcoming solo album.

So it now seems both Ian and John have refuted the story. This suggests two things - 1. It was a hoax,Or more likely,2. It was a cynical and self-serving attempt to force the band or certain members' hands by guilt tripping them into agreeing.Essentially, it seemed aimed at Ian, the one member who has always held fast to his desire never to reform - and in a recent interview stated he'd have to be down to his last chicken dinner and would only consider doing it for charity. It would be interesting to hear a certain Mr Mounfield's comments on this story as at the moment the evidence points in his direction bearing in mind his recent and ever more bombastic claims to be able to make it happen.Whoever was responsible, it was a dirty act of willful deception and game-playing.Stand up and be counted.
