Wilco frontman Jeff Tweedy has responded to a $50,000 lawsuit slapped on him by former member Jay Bennett, saying he does not know why he is being sued.

Bennett filed the suit against Tweedy in Chicago, claiming he is owed royalties for songs, as well as his part in a 2002 documentary about the band.

He was a member of the band from 1994 to 2001, and played various instruments on the albums 'Being There', 'Summerteeth', 'Mermaid Avenue', 'Mermaid Avenue Vol. II' and 'Yankee Hotel Foxtrot'.

Bennett is claiming at least $50,000 in damages, and says that he was not paid for appearing in the documentary 'I Am Trying To Break Your Heart'. He also said he did not sign a release form to appear.

Tweedy responded to the suit with a statement to Paste, saying:

"I know exactly as much as everyone else does. I've read the news and I honestly have no idea what these claims are based on. It was such a long time ago. Aside from everything else, I'm being sued for not paying someone for appearing in a movie I didn't produce. Go figure. I am truly sad it has come to this. I am equally convinced, however, that I have done nothing wrong and that this will be handled fairly and swiftly."
