Noel Gallagher quits Oasis after Paris 'altercation'

Guitarist walks after gig cancellation

Noel Gallagher quit Oasis tonight (August 28).

Following the Manchester band's cancelled show at the Paris Rock en Seine festival this evening, he posted the following statement on Oasisinet.com.

"It's with some sadness and great relief to tell you that I quit Oasis tonight," he wrote. "People will write and say what they like, but I simply could not go on working with [singer, his brother] Liam a day longer."

The band pulled out of the Paris show just before they were due onstage, with organisers allegedly displaying a message explaining an "altercation" had caused the cancellation.

Have your say on the split by taking part in NME.COM's vote: Can Oasis continue without Noel? now.

Holy shit, it looks like we'll finally see the back of them! Don't worry NME, I'm sure you'll find a way to waffle on about them every fucking issue. There's the obligatory memorial issue, fans' and bands' reactions, 'classic' posters, 10 year old gig reviews....

Aug 29, 2009

Perhaps there is a God after all. At last we may finally see the end of the most overrated band of all time! NME, does this mean, surely not, that your stalker led obsession with the band may end!?Please confirm this. The prospect of no more articles with Liam telling some random person with a brain they are a 'fucking student' as though that was insulting and of Noel claiming Oasis to be as important 'as the Rolling Stones' is something to be savoured.

i can see the headline " oasis, rest in pieces" im gutted, they were the soundtrack and the boot behind my teenage years, they were similar to so many great bands before them but they transcended and set themselves apart by being so damn good at being themselves, won't be another band the same, loved them and will do till i die.

morano1989

Aug 29, 2009

I am sure anyone who has followed them from the beginning are relieved as well. it's been a painful 12 years since Be Here Now. Some nice moments on the last to albums, but nothing worthy of the name Oasis. Farewell guys. Thanks for the mid-90s.

Aug 29, 2009

I know there are a lot of Oasis haters on here. But at the end of the day, if Noel genuinely doesn't ever want to get back with Oasis, we've lost one of the only true iconic British Bands still going and lets face it everyone feels a bit awkward seeing The Who and Rolling Stones strutting their stuff. Worst day of my life, listening through their albums chronologically as i type. Going to be a long night

Oasis were past their best a long time ago. 12 years by my watch. The last album, for people that had grown up with them was embarassing. It shows that they haven´t developed at all. I´ve also noticed on this Oasis "round" that they´ve been cashing in as much as they can, which has also turned me off. I like many former Oasis fans thought to myself what is the point of going to see them? What are they going to do that is new? Nothing is the answer. But this is all a publicity stunt anyway. Noel will do his solo album, and then two years later, Oasis will "triumphantly" reform. And the masses will buy tickets in their droves. They have sold out more than any band I can think of. The only saving grace is that Noel on his own might be able to write some good songs again.

And they say 'all news is bad news'! Hallelujah. If you ask me Liam has single handedly tried to ruin every song he has sung since definitly maybe. Not that ive been blown away with many of Noels songs since then, but the single worst thing about them by a merry mile has clearly been that bow legged, terry-christian-voiced, gets his teeth knocked out moron Liam.Im so looking forward to some of Liams solo material! The big girl is straight from a playground. False attitude and delusions of being hard (bottled it from Robbie Williams (!!!) and teeth rearranged in Germany - and by an ordinary lad - not 'mafia gangsters' as he tried to claim)Cant sing. cant play, cant write songs and is jealous of his OWN BROTHER!Boring, boring Liam... time to grow fat and old soft lad!!!!At least Noel can concentrate on trying to write another good album like the one he wrote in 1990-something or other.

Sad day for british music, the last great british rock 'n' roll band. Down to Arctic Monkeys and Kasabian now to fend off the spotty indie shitsters. They'll be a huge miss to music, regardless of whether you're into them or not. RIP.

Markey92

Aug 29, 2009

Why do people feel the need to slag them off? They are arguably the best band that the UK has produced for YEARS, and I'm pretty devastated at this news. Gonna put on the albums I think.

Will1972

Aug 29, 2009

Thank Christ.. Noel can now concentrate on playing with his eyebrows and being a 'Thunderbirds Parker the Driver' lookalike on a full time basis and Liam can focus on hanging off the arm of an All Saint and his "inspired" new clothing line. Goodnight and God Bless...

Aug 29, 2009

I have always been a huge Oasis fan..the first album was pretty much my the soundtrack to my youth. But I hope this spilt is actually for real. Oasis have seemed tired for ages now. It would actually be far more interesting what both brothers come up with solo - an Oasis without Noel (Liam at the helm) & a Noel Solo effort. Bring on the nest wave of media compatition. Its no longer Oasis VS Blur....but Oasis VS Neol....you couldn't have written it any better.

middle class pompous university students around britain will be celebrating. now they can enjoy high culture and snobbery again and maybe it will become fashionable again. people will always hate oasis coz they said it like it was, instead of prancing around with this bullshit pretension. it was just your shit, you ha you, your as bad as your fucking jeans, and they are fucking bad, and as for you, dont even get me started on you. these indie bands just create an atmosphere where everyones content with being shit. and barcroft, i dont think you can really call long blondes and white lies great, can you, its not music is it. oasis was emotional, working class and honest. the bands you funboys classify music is all dishonest pretentious shit art. id rather have good music(oasis)_ over shit art(think bloc party). and to musiecian chavs dont like oasis, they like garage, lads like oasis. Yet you dont know about it do ya, coz you just read about it in your cosy palace. They are both working class subcultures so they are all the same to you. Oasis, brilliant music, actually relevant. and all the beatles shit, lets be honest, if any of you "music fans" actually knew music youd know that oasis sound alot more like t-rex, slade, the La's, The Stone Roses, the real people and The Who. but you just read cliched articles. "We see things theyll never see". Oasis, the most relevant british band of the last 20 years. The Long Blondes, White Lies???? what. middle class fanboys, make your witticisms which you have long strummed over here. it makes up for the inadequacy of not being able to plug witty comments in proper social environments. I'm off to listen to definitely maybe. RIP Oasis

davidagillespie

Aug 29, 2009

2 very average retro rock albums and then 10 years of plodding mundanity. They made music for people who liked being part of the herd. Plus for all their pathetic ' hardman ' talk did they ever actually win a fight ?

Aug 29, 2009

There are many haters of oasis on this site - but im guessing they are still in school and not old enough to remember that Oasis were THE band in the 90's and changed everything. Most of their albums post 2000 were very good and they still had some fantastic singles! Can anyone name a band now today thats good enough, relevant enough to create a lasting impact and strike up an immediate debate like Oasis can?

dynohmike

Aug 29, 2009

What is truly sad is that there are apparently loads of people out there who have nothing better to do than comment on bands they don't like. You seriously have that much free time? Maybe try talking to girls... going out... doing something with yourselves? Ever tried that? Probably not. Hope Noel is happy with his decision and gets on the solo album.

Sad news , Oasis soundtracked my life. There isn't alot left i think. Can't stand all these twatty indie bands - they all sound the same. Makes me laugh all these people slagging off Oasis on here. They have done more than all the bollocks bands that are featured in the NME week in and week out put together. Their songs defined a generation and restored decent music to the charts. There is no one to take their place.

Dangerous Marsupial

Aug 29, 2009

As much as I dislike the way Oasis have slagged off just about every band in history, just maybe they're the only ones with the right to do so.

darko189

Aug 29, 2009

james_S10 - being a working class band doesn't make that band good. I don't give a fuck if they're working class. It's a cheap gimmick to gain fans. "Living on an estate is proper shit, innit? 'Ang on lads, is that 'Wonderwall'? I fookin' love this song! I said maybeeeeeeeeeee...."Did you know that aside from the prententious, arty types and Oasis dickheads there are people and music that don't fit into either group? I shit you not.

msuttz1927

Aug 29, 2009

I don't understand the hatred shown from NME readers towards Oasis! this band is always on the receiving end of musical snobbery, e.g. ‘Museician, Aug 29 2009: chavs and middle aged men across the country are mourning’! no doubt your some indie lad wearing the jeans given to you by your sister as she couldn’t fit into them! if this is 'it', then this is a very sad day for music, not just for British rock n' roll, but for rock n' roll around the globe! a couple of 1990's has-beens, I think not! who in this day and age could sell out Wembley, Heaton Park, the Hollywood Bowl, Knebworth or Even Madison Square Garden, as well as having the same influence on kids growing up on the streets of England in '09, as those back in '94??? well, I'm certainly racking my brain! don't forget that, without Oasis, many of today's bands would hardly exist, that or they would have an entirely different sound - think of Kasabian, The Libertines, Arctic Monkeys, The Enemy, KOL and The Strokes, to name just a few! you ask who there influences where, no doubt Oasis' name would appear on that list! you wont go to any other gig in the world and find middle-aged men embrace each other, arms round shoulders, fists in the air, singing their hearts out to the anthems of their generation – if you have ever witnessed this, like I have, you will know what I’m talking about, its a sight you know you'll never see anywhere else! of course they haven't bettered 'Definitely, Maybe' or '...Morning Glory!', who could!?!?! those albums changed the course of music in the 90's, albums that made ‘us’ dare believe we could and can change the world! their music has brought joy to some many fans and people worldwide, bringing hope and belief to every single one of us, no matter what may stand in our way, no matter how shite the times are, that we can ‘live forever’! Amen!

And all the people saying thank God we're rid of them? Its Oasis....they break up every other day anyway and even if they dont theyll more than likely both still be in the music business so youve not heard the end of them you idiots I know its kinda sad but I do take a little joy from the fact that all you idiots commenting negatively about Oasis will see in the next while that they will still be about Hahaha you morons

Oasis were one of the most important bands in the mid-1990s, and they soundtracked a particular place and time in my life and many other people's. the first two albums are stone cold classics and deserve their place in history. For that I am extremely grateful and they deserve respect. However, they have been on a steady decline since Be Here Now (funnily enough, the album of their career that saw them get the worst reviews was Morning Glory. FACT. Even though it was and is a brilliant album). I have to say that Liam Gallagher's anti-intellectual stance is absolutely nothing to do with being working class and symptomatic of a massive inferiority complex and a chip on his shoulder. There are plenty of working class Mancunians who did have a brain and read - ever heard of Steven Morrissey?

playparanoid

They are/were one of the few bands that still had that true rock attitude. Stopped listening to them about ten years ago but still, if it's definitely over this time, it is an end of an era.

Aug 29, 2009

This is tremendous news (first Big Brother and now this! Maybe the next decade will make up for the last 2!). Oasis were simply the worst thing in British music for the last tedious 15 years. Attitude over any sort of substance. And the slew of utter shit they inspired is even worse. Let's hope this means the end of them for good...then maybe music can move forward again. Goodbye Oasis...you made me ashamed of our music scene.

97mde

Oasis were always The Rolling Stones of Britpop, Blur were our Beatles. Even this year, we saw who was best. Oasis were a great singles band, but Blur we're the ultimate Britpop group.

You can all say what you want but you all know that somewhere in your music collection you have at least 5 oasis tracks. To all who say Oasis are irrelevant, what a load of horse shit; if they were irrelevant, you wouldn't talk about them. Had Burnages finest never formed, you wouldn't have your Arctic Monkeys, Razorlights, Libertines etc around today. I don't care what you say, all of those bands have said in an interview had it not been for Definitely Maybe, they wouldn't have made the music they make. You can all walk around like blind sheep wearing your checkered shirts, skin tight jeans, snooker cue shoes and look like you've just come off of the streets and could do with a fucking good wash but remember that had it not been for these boys, music as we know it would be obsolete. Everyone would be walking round acting like a gangster rapper, when they come from Oxford, Cambridge etc. FUCK THE HATERS! Live Forever!

1984orwell

Aug 30, 2009

97 mde the problem with Oasis is that they wrote the greatest album they could possibly ever produce with Definitely Maybe. They could write music until the year 3000 and they'd never top the sheer genius of that album. Blur on the other hand are still trying to write its parallel nearly 15 years after britpop finished. Live Forever!!!!!!!!

ned5k
