Demand for app forces Spotify to go back to 'invite only' sign-up

New UK users need a friend's recommendation to join

Demand for app forces Spotify to go back to 'invite only' sign-up

Free music streaming application Spotify has reverted to an invitation-only policy with regards to new UK users after an increase in demand following its launch of a Spotify application for iPhones and Android handsets on Monday (September 7).

A message posted on Spotify.com/blog yesterday (September 10) explained that new users must now be invited to download the application by an existing user – as was the policy of Spotify when it first launched in October 2008.

"We are invite-only in all our other launch countries but we hope to be able to remove the need for an invite again very soon," Spotify representative Andres Sehr wrote on the blog.

There is a waiting list for potential UK users to sign up for the application at Spotify.com/en/products/free/#get-started.
