Five years after the final episode of Top Of The Pops aired, BPI chairman Tony Wadsworth has called for the BBC to re-invigorate the show.

Speaking to Music Week, Wadsworth said that "we are not saying 'bring back TOTP' but there is a gap, and the BBC is missing a trick by not having a show".

BBC 6Music and The Culture Show presenter Lauren Laverne agreed. She said: "I think now more than ever we need Top Of The Pops back."

Laverne stressed that the show would need to be tweaked for a new viewership, adding: "I don’t know whether you’d want to do it in a chart-based way or more of some kind of social media you could base it on."

However, a BBC spokesman stated that: “We are constantly in discussion with the music industry, but there are currently no plans to bring back Top Of The Pops.”

Top Of The Pops aired for the final time on July 30, 2006 following a 42 year run. In the past, acts such as Florence And The Machine - pictured above - Dizzee Rascal, Calvin Harris and Seasick Steve have signed a petition calling for the return of the programme.
