A cover version of Maroon 5's track 'Payphone' may reach top ten of the singles chart on Sunday, before the original version is even released.

A version of the song by the group Precision Tunes reached number 14 in the official chart update on Wednesday and is at number 5 in today's iTunes chart. Maroon 5's original version, featuring Wiz Khalifa is not released in the UK until June 17, Digital Spy reports.

Unofficial cover versions occur when an upcoming song has received a significant amount of airplay and there is high demand for the track, but is yet to be released. Usually, an artist's record company will notice the cover track and rush release the original.

Maroon 5 have yet to release their own version, which makes it likely that the Precision Tunes cover will make it into the top ten on Sunday before Maroon 5.

Precision Tunes have covered a range of artists, including Drake, Nicki Minaj, Justin Bieber, Chris Brown and Usher. A cover of Flo Rida's 'Whistle' by a group named Can You Blow My reached number 38 last week, forcing the original to be rush-released halfway through the week.
