The film, which is titled Heaven Adores You, is the first full-length documentary with access to Smith's close circle of friends and will show at the San Francisco International Film Festival on May 5.

Directed by Nickolas Rossi, it will feature previously unreleased songs, pictures, and rare footage in addition to interviews with Smith’s friends and collaborators. Among those appearing in the documentary are Smith’s sister Ashley, Joanna Bolme, Jon Brion, Neil Gust, Larry Crane and Rob Schnapf.

"This project is a love letter to Elliott and his music," the film's music director Kevin Moyer said. "And it’s a love letter to Portland really too - as well as Texas, New York, and Los Angeles which are the other places that Elliott called home.

"And most importantly, it’s a love letter from a whole bunch of other great people who were close to Elliott and loved him just as much too; friends and confidants who graciously trusted us with such a sensitive subject and put their own vulnerabilities aside to help us explain to the world why we all loved him."

Earlier this year, three previously unreleased Elliott Smith dance tracks were shared online. They were made public by Mike Doughty, former frontman of '90s New York alt-rockers Soul Coughing.

Elliott Smith released five solo studio albums before his death in 2003. Two further albums, 2004's 'From A Basement On A Hill' and 2007's 'New Moon', were released posthumously.
