UK FASTEST GROWING CD MARKET

The UK is the fastest growing market for music CDs, according to a report released yesterday (October 2).

The Federation Of Phonographic Industries said that more than 88 million CDs were sold in the first six months of the year here in Britain, a 10% increase year on year - as opposed to a drop of five per cent worldwide.

Industry experts are blaming the global decrease in sales on an increase in the number of people illicitly burning their own CDs on computers at home - a practice which is more common elsewhere in Europe, especially in Germany, than in the UK.

As previously reported on NME.COM, the British Phonographic Industry (BPI) along with other global organisations such as RIAA in the US, are working on ways to electronically watermark CDs and sound files to make copying on home PCs impossible.
