Noel Gallagher's High Flying Birds beat The X Factor's Matt Cardle to top the UK album chart

Noel Gallagher has beaten The X Factor winner Matt Cardle to the top of the UK album chart tonight (October 23).

The ex-Oasis chief's 'Noel Gallagher's High Flying Birds' outsold his pop rival's 'Letters' by 40 percent, clocking up sales of 120,000 in its first week alone. The figures are also almost double that of brother Liam Gallagher's Beady Eye debut, 'Different Gear, Still Speeding', which charted at Number Three in March.

Noel Gallagher is set to play his first gig at Dublin Olympia Theatre tonight. He announced a new UK and Ireland arena tour earlier today.

Elsewhere, The Stone Roses' self-titled debut album went in at 40 following the news earlier this week that the band have reformed.

In the singles chart, Rihanna held on to the top spot for a third week running with her Calvin Harris collaboration 'We Found Love'. Elsewhere, Lana Del Rey went straight in at Number Nine with her debut single 'Video Games'.
