Noel Gallagher played two shows for a special one-off performance at London's Royal Albert Hall on Thursday night (December 10).

The former Oasis chief ditched usual support slot practice and instead opened the show himself with a semi-acoustic 40 minute set consisting entirely of songs by his former band.

Along with his regular High Flying Birds bandmates, Gallagher was also joined by ex-Oasis guitarist Gem Archer for the 40 minute set. It marked the second time in a week he has performed with Archer. They played together for the first time since 2010 at a gig in Lincoln over the weekend.

Arriving onstage to a backing tape featuring Gallagher singing a cover of Neil Young's 'Hey Hey, My My', he strapped on an acoustic guitar for Oasis b-side 'It's Good To Be Free' before he followed it up with 'D'Yer Wanna Be A Spaceman'.

Announcing his entrance, Gallagher said: "Thanks for getting here early by the way. I am only doing this because we couldn't find a fucking support band. I ain't joking neither. My manager goes, 'I've got a fucking great idea, you can be the support band and play for four hours'. I get double the rider though so every cloud."

Backed by a three-piece brass section, his band then launched into 'Listen Up' and 'Sad Song' before he joked: "Having said that it [being the support act] does give me the chance to blow myself off the fucking stage."

He then dedicated 'Slide Away' to his wife who was watching in the crowd. Gallagher wrapped up his first set with 'Cast No Shadow', Number One hit 'The Importance Of Being Idle' and finally 'Wonderwall'.

Ahead of the latter, he quipped: "The headline act is a cunt by the way. He's not given us a soundcheck and he's not fucking spoken to us all day."

Thirty minutes later he returned to the stage for his main set backed by a three piece brass section and the Crouch End Choir.

Kicking off his second show of the night he joked: "That was a tough act to follow," before adding: "He's very pleased with himself back there the big headed cunt."

The frontman and the High Flying Birds then opened with 'Everybody's On The Run' from his 2011 debut solo album.

He mixed his set with tracks from that record along with his recent album 'Chasing Yesterday' and a few Oasis classics including 'Fade Away', 'Champagne Supernova', 'Talk Tonight' 'Whatever', 'Digsy's Dinner', 'The Masterplan', 'Don't Look Back In Anger' and 'Half The World Away'.

Ahead of the latter he told the crowd: "What I can say it's been an absolute fucking dream come true playing for myself tonight. Give it up for the support band they were fucking brilliant. I'll leave you with this anyway. Merry fucking Christmas."

He returned for a three song encore which saw a girl in the crowd climb onstage to give Gallagher a hug and kiss before she was removed by security. "That's my PA, she's pissed out her head," he added.
