Oasis' Liam Gallagher disappointed by Kings Of Leon

Singer brands the Followill clan sellouts

Despite being a Kings Of Leon fan, Liam Gallagher has said that he doesn't like the band's new album 'Only By The Night'.

The singer was discussing his favourite records with Rolling Stone when he hit out at the Followill clan.

"I like Kings Of Leon, but I don't know about this fucking new record," he declared. "I like the old stuff. I like (Caleb Followill’s) voice. When they first come out I was going, 'Who the fuck is this?' They were cool, and now they've all got their sleeves cut off."

Gallagher went on to suggest the Tennessee band had "sold out", and that they were trying to emulate U2.

He added: "It seems to me they've gone for the bucks, man. I'm not dissing them because I fucking really like them, but it's like they've got this U2 sound and you can do better than that."

Gallagher though did list the bands he is into, declaring: "The band that I like at the moment is Kasabian. They've got it. They've got the look, the tunes, they say just the right amount of stuff, they don't fucking rub it and rub it and rub it. I like them and the Arctic Monkeys are great, but they're not rock stars. That's really it."

OH dear.......i didnt realise that you had become a sonic terrorist Liam! Kings of Leon have got effortless cool whereas you try FAR too hard.

For a guy who spouts a lot of shite, this is an accurate statement. Kings - sack off Use Somebody and get back to Four Kicks!!!

Oct 31, 2008

Liam is 100% right. KOL were average at best on their early albums, had a few killer tracks. This new LP is them trying to make themselves into a stadium band and it sounds shiite. Use Somebody would not be out of place on a Coldplay album. That how low they have gone in order to make the $$$. They'll be on X Factor soon. Liam is the man!

liam does talk a lot of jibberish sometimes. but this is one instance where i actually agree with the man. my friends and I have discussed this whole thing. I mean they were shit hot when they first came about. those first two albums are some of the best stuff this decade. but this new album and this new image overhaul. its all a lot to swallow. I understand they're much more successful overseas than here in the US, but if they are going down this road of looking like douchebags for some hipster appeal in the US, its sadly a wrong turn on their path. in my opinion...and thus here come the 20,000 ranting angry replies slamming my opinion, slamming my call to side with liam gallagher, slamming the US, slamming anything else they can get a hold of. It's the truth. look at a picture of them from years ago and listen to an album from years ago, and now look at them and listen to them. the milk has gone bad.

since when were oasis not hugely selling out?!

Lewis1

Oct 31, 2008

it's a fair comment, as the new album is not that brilliant. BUT i don't think he understands that they need to do a 'big' stadium rock-type album after headlining glasto, v, etc. they're a big band now, so they need to release an album with these kind of tracks on.next album they'll be back to blues/country edged rock

Good call from Liam. KOL old material much better.

freddyd69

Oct 31, 2008

"I like the old stuff", hmm Liam? Do you not think the vast majority of people who have heard some of the half arsed crap your band has put out in the last 8 years feel the same about your band?

olliecs

Oct 31, 2008

Wow, that's amazing because when Oasis came out I was like "Who the fuck is this?" but now I think they have sold out to get a boring average sound. Liam, Your brother SHOULD do better than that!

oasis is ropey rubbish

rizzle85

Oct 31, 2008

I think he's shot himself in the foot really, i just dont think bands can reproduce the same heights as what theyre first albums reach. He likes Kasabian, theyre second album was nothing like theyre first, all downhill from track 3. Im a big Oasis fan but i have to admit im getting tired of reading about him on here, and about people selling out. I think most bands will make their money off their first albums, and by theri third and fourth albums the material they used when they were 'poor and taking drugs to cos theres nowt else to do' has already been used and all they can write about is, Family and birds. ie Little James, She Is Love, Little By Little.

I think Liam is spot on, he is not having a pop he seems to hold them in high regard..but he is right.

Oct 31, 2008

i'm disappointed by Liam, to be honest this just makes him look jealous of KOL's success. I respect the fact that KOL are diversifying and giving their fans a wide range of music to listen to. The new album is a sign that the band has grown and matured and so has their sound. The early records sound like a young, brash band, and the last 2 records sound like a band who have fine-tuned their song-writing and are ready to tackle more difficult styles. As Axl Rose once said: 'It takes more heart to branch out than it does just to carry on making the harder sounding music'.At the end of the day, you can choose what to listen to: if you like the old stuff then listen to it, if you are open-minded, listen to all of their music.

Oct 31, 2008

spot on there, monkey man!!.when i first started to hear `Fans` from the last album on the radio i was worried and after hearing the first two songs from the new album i was gutted, they are a radio band now.`Aha shake heartbreak` will always be there best stuff.

I disagree with Liam Gallagher. I find heard of the Kings last summer, but I hated tunes like On Call and Charmer and just dismissed them as rubbish, but when they came round again this time it was a totally different story, the album is fantastic, songs like Crawl and Notion really are just sex on fire! :) But then in terms of personal prefrence I've always prefered pop sounding rock music, to rock sounding music hence prefering older beatles tunes like All My Loving to the more crazy stuff like A Day In The Life. Anyway in a nutshell the new album is more pop sounding, so i'm going to love it, but original fans, well they'll hate it, but it's just personal preferance really. It's not really suprising he loves Kasabian though, or Arctics for that matter.

ArcticMonkey

Oct 31, 2008

I adore Kings (seeing them in December) & I adore Oasis (seeing them at Wembley next year), but I wonder if Liam is doing what a lot of old school Kings fans are doing. Since Sex On Fire, the band have become pretty mainstream & it tends to put hardcore fans off a bit when the chav next door bangs on about how much he loves Kigns Of Leon! Maybe that's how Liam's feeling!

Llj90

Oct 31, 2008

For once I agree with Liam....I love old school KOL. The new album is weak.

gazhat

Oct 31, 2008

.........agreed agreed agreed.....this new KOL cd does nowt for me, my mate played it to me and i think it just goes pretty much downhill after sex on fire....still better than the fucking Killers, Pierser chefs, Cold Patrol, Snow Play...the list goes on..

underclasshero

Nov 3, 2008

Kings of Leon are still a million times better than Oasis. The new KOL album is epic.

jamesheal

Nov 3, 2008

I agree with Liam too - i'm a massive Kings of Leon fan since day one but the new album is a bit weak, the opening three and Be Somebody are tunes but the rest is very MOR - like someone else said, Fans - stick the rocking and forget about the radio!

rubbersoul7

Nov 3, 2008

I agree the new album is weak, but it still has a few class tracks on there. Cold Desert, Notion, Revelry and I Want You are all superb, but all in all it doesn't even come close to their first two records. I'm hoping for the next album they will go back to their roots and write a quality gritty southern rock album - they are certainly capable of doing so again. The thing I dont understand is how Liam can critersise KOL but talk highly of Kasabian! Kasabian are simply terrible.

Orangeboy

Nov 3, 2008

Well Liam, I have been disappointed with your last five albums. And as for selling out, haha good one.

xBird

Nov 3, 2008

I agree, I love the kings' old stuff. I think they gone a little soft. My favorite albums are still youth & young manhood and aha shake heartbreak.

shakermaker1994

liam is absolutely right!!!

alzatron

Nov 3, 2008

i like liam and oasis and i like kings of leon, but this is spot on. the guys honest and i respect his views anyway, and i like hows he's not slagging them off - he just thinks they could do better, which is absolutely true. the problem with the new KOL album is that it's not interesting.

ice_cold_cube

Nov 3, 2008

im gonna have to disagree. KOL sound equally as good now as they did in the earlier albums, at least you can now hear what Caleb is singing. im a big fan of oasis but i think a lot of their tracks sound similar and dig out your soul is a dead ringer for a beatles album, at least KOL have some variety and originality in their tunes.

lindercaleblover

Nov 3, 2008

Don't agree. Love Kol new album.

skeuta

Nov 3, 2008

thanks liam.. good thing you would never untuck your little balls and try a new melody.. your songs sound the same, you fuck.. blame the producer for making their sound a bit different.... but atleast the lead singer has an interesting voice.. where as anyone, including myself, can sound like you.

rockingraver

Nov 3, 2008

at least kings of leon had good ALBUMS at the start unlike oasis who had 3 good songs per album and now have 1 at the most.

jamesscarry13

Nov 3, 2008

Oh my god soundedd you really are thick everyone in the whole world knows that the first two albums are the best.It takes a real retard to finally like a great band after their worst album

stu conway

Nov 3, 2008

oh the irony! now he knows how everyone who's bought an oasis album after be here now feels. only by the night is infinitely better than dig out yer (arse) soul

imronburgundy

Nov 3, 2008

yeah gotta agree with the kid here, but like he said, thats not to say KOL arent still a top band. i loved their early albums and they were spot on with because of the times, only the reason it was good was because it was branching out. this new album is hardly branching out.

wales_rule11

Nov 3, 2008

new kol album is shit, but then again i dont see oasis written anything good either, remember we aint in the 90s anymore like,

crackfoxxx

Nov 3, 2008

Come on, feel for Gallagher. He knows exactly how it feels for people to only 'like the early stuff'. haha

benw1993

Nov 3, 2008

suprised so many people agreeing with liam, i think the new KOL album is as brilliant as the first 3, not quite as good as dig out your soul though

robbiefowler

Nov 3, 2008

How can anyone say Oasis have sold out? Sold out from what? There first album was the fastest selling debut when it was released. If anything, there music is less commercial than it was for the first few albums. If Dig Out Your Soul was released by Kings of Leon, or Bloc Party or any of the other ''cool'' bands it would be getting 5 stars everywhere

its_rudimentary

Nov 3, 2008

I think JamesScarry13 sums up the situation with great eloquence, spot on fella!!

Nov 3, 2008

Jamesscary haha what an idiot. Get it into your thick skull that music is about opinion not fact and that you don't decide "what is good" and you'll be on the right track musically and in life generally :)

MartynDavenport

Nov 4, 2008

lol hilarious!! He's gotta be saying this deliberately right? He must know how ridiculous it sounds for someone like him to accuse anyone of selling out!? He should know all about mediocrety making megabucks. And the new Kings of Leon album is infinitely better than anything Oasis have spat out over the last decade

BRMC_08

Nov 6, 2008

If you havent relised by now Liam couldnt really give a flying fuck what anyone thinks of his band, at the end of the day some one asked him his opinion and he gave it so what?? also how have Oasis sold out? he and Noel always said they wanted to be a big band have loads of money and thats what they've done.

MartynDavenport

Nov 6, 2008

ok, so did Kings Of Leon ever say they didn't want to be huge? By your logic if they didn't then they haven't sold out either, and Liam would be being massively hypocritical. He just stop shouting his mouth off and channel his energy into either writing something worthwhile or retiring to some nice secluded island somewhere, instead of force-feeding the "Oasis-til-I-die" sheep even more drivel

MELVIN

Nov 7, 2008

I agree 100%. Thats what the new album sounds like, every song trying to be an anthem for young girls to cry and sing over. "Sex on fire" and Use Somebody" are the two worst songs Kings Of Leon have ever made, and people supporting garbage is only going to make it worse. Their first two albums were so amazing, every song is classic, their third album was good with a few songs that should have been B-sides, and then this new album has no flow, it feels like one huge sad song with no rock what so ever! You can play arenas without changing your sound or releasing "POP" music for MTV to play on the top 10. I love that Liam said this publicly, someone had to.

loco_monkey

Nov 7, 2008

every band has the ability 2 evolve. I like Liam & Oasis, but KOL have produced something interesting 4 times runnin'. Only by the night has great sounds 1st, & lyrics 2 match. I'd luv 2 b a critic of sceptics, ur such easy targets!

mmel001

Nov 7, 2008

I don't agree, I think the new album is an evolution of their sound, and it took me a while to get into it, but I love it. There's some catchy songs on that album which are likely to appeal to a much wider audience, but I don't think they have sold out. No matter what song you listen to on that album, you can always make the distinction that it's KOL and not some other non descript band. They have their sound, and I find their new stuff atmospheric and full of feeling.

taylorg

Nov 12, 2008

I love Oasis and Liam is a legend albeit a bit of a numpty. But to say the Kings of leon album is poor is a terrible decision. When you listen to it non stop you can take in how good it is. The bass lines, the voice of caleb and just the overall KOL sound they produce which is so unique at the moment. Use somebody is a hefty tune, sex on fire is immense and others like crawl, be somebody, manhatten and notion are other highlights on an awesome album. I'm surprised so many loyal KOL fans have been dissed only by the night. It is there best album. They're are growing as a band and so their music is growing with them. To me they sound nothing like U2, I dont know what Liam is talking about there. But if you listen to it in entirety you'll start to see its one of the top 5 albums of 2008. Simply brilliant. KOL have grown which is the exact opposite to what Oasis have done in 17 years. Do music lovers want KOL to change or just stay the same like Oasis. Change is good. But in Oasis case i think its been best they have kept their original sound because its Oasis. I love both bands immensely and I just can't see why people are so quick to moan when a band changes its sound. I'll accept Slipway fires moaning because that is awful. But give KOL a chance, you'll soon see what I'm going on about.

I'm from the U.S. and I honestly can't stand Kings of Leon. Most of my friends love them and women seem to like them a lot also. I guess I'm asking why are they so popular on your side of the pond? The reason they are not popular here is Caleb's voice is just not radio friendly. Unless you listen to radio geared towards retards and people who sing like retards...

Kings Of Leon And Oasis Are Genius .but oasis are higher on legend ladder.

jrule

Nov 22, 2008

Ironically when I first heard of KOL, it was because of Liam's comment that they were his favourite new band. The first album had not even been released yet, I preordered it just because of his comment. Let’s face it back then Liam never had anything nice to say about any band, so I thought these guys must be special. How right he was, first album original, fresh and exciting. Ever track a proper uplifting tune, fantastic stuff. Then after this, the third and fourth album just whine and whine on vocals, what happened to this great band's catchy tunes? It is now very depressing; if I wanted this I just go out and buy the new Coldplay album. My wife also agrees as this was the band we both got into from the start of their careers and have seen four times. She also mentioned that they sound like U2 now…..
