Oasis forced to abandon Manchester Heaton Park stage

Boos as technical difficulties cause delays

Oasis were forced to abandon the stage twice at their huge headline show at Manchester's Heaton Park tonight (June 4) due to technical difficulties.

Liam and Noel Gallagher and co left the stage while generator problems were fixed, once during their opening song, then again during the second number. They then returned to play a full live set, during which they vowed to give full refunds to the 70,000 fans in attendance.

At around 9pm (BST), following support slots from Twisted Wheel, Reverend And The Makers (standing in for The Enemy, who cancelled due to frontman Tom Clarke falling ill) and Kasabian, the band began their set with 'Rock 'N' Roll Star'.

The song was stopped due to sound problems, and the band headed off stage for around ten minutes to the sound of boos from the crowd.

They then returned and began to play 'Lyla', although that song was also cut short due to further sound troubles.

The band left the stage again, while a message appeared on the stage screens declaring that the problems would be fixed as soon as technical staff could sort them out.

The message explained that generator failure was causing the issues, while smoke could be seen emanating from the equipment. It was then updated to say "Almost there!".

Oasis returned to the stage after around 40 minutes to successfully kick-start the set again with 'The Shock Of The Lightning' and 'Cigarettes And Alcohol', with the Gallaghers promising to give fans their money back.

"Really sorry about that," Liam Gallagher told the crowd. "This is a free gig now. Everyone will get a refund."

His brother Noel added: "The curfew's 11, but we'll play 'til they kick us off. Keep your ticket and you'll get your money back."

Later in the set, however, the logistics of the promised refunds seemed to trouble Noel.

"We're not sure how its gonna work with getting the money back," he said before playing 'Half The World Away'. "Be on a website or summat. We're not getting paid for this so buy a t-shirt on the way out. Credit crunch and that, keep my kids in sweets.

"If you're getting your mum and dad to pick you up outside afterwards, tell them we're not leaving til 2am. Kind of regret offering you your money back now. Apply for it back if you wanna be a cunt, we do our best for you."

The band played a 23-song set, ending with their customary cover of The Beatles' 'I Am The Walrus' at 11:20pm.

Oasis played:

'Rock 'N' Roll Star'
'Lyla'
'The Shock Of The Lightning'
'Roll With It'
'Cigarettes And Alcohol'
'The Meaning Of Soul'
'To Be Where There's Life'
'Waiting For The Rapture'
'The Masterplan'
'Songbird'
'Slide Away'
'Morning Glory'
'My Big Mouth'
'The Importance Of Being Idle'
'Half The World Away'
'I'm Outta Time'
'Wonderwall'
'Live Forever'
'Supersonic'
'Don't Look Back In Anger'
'Falling Down'
'Champagne Supernova'
'I Am The Walrus'

They are set to play Heaton Park again on Saturday (June 6) and Sunday (7).

This is awful news. What a shame. I'm there on sunday, hope they are sorted then. Hopefully they can play a late gig tonight. They cant just leave it like this. Bloody shame. Hope the fans dont get too violent.

See, Sachin, thats really the problem with Oasis crowds now isn't it. There just full of yobs who would kick off given half the chance, especially after 40 mins of having to drink their way through the delay. Why should get violent? It's obviously not the bands fault, they've tried to sort it out and they've offered refunds. what more can they do? getting violent is just fucked up, but alas, probably expected from a crowd like that.

Who's saying anyone's got violent!? Give them a chance fucks sake

mithras0174

No violence, just really good atmosphere and good hearted (if rather colourful!) heckling during the break. My eldest kid has just attended this, his first proper concert with his Dad who's a bit of an Oasis fan and by all accounts it was a fantastic night and they've just finished singing (at about 11:30 instead of the advertised 10:30). I have to sy from what I heard breifly during their calls to me Oasis rock live!

Darve, i've been to plenty of Oasis gigs and I dont know why, but a lot of drunken idiots turn up. I dont see the point is splashing the cash on tickets, and then being so drunk you wont remember the gig. When people are drunk they can kick off over anything. Glad they got the gig sorted. Oasis gigs are usually 50% idiots and 50% normal decent folk. Fair play to Oasis for the refunds! Still need Bag it Up on the setlist!

Oh well it could be worse have you seen his clothing line??!!! I've seen better fake t-shirts outside a blur gig

if they had sorted their equipment out properly in the first case this wouldnt have happened. every oasis gig i have ever been to has had technical problems of one sort or another. cant they get the right staff to avoid things like this? ths was a disaster waiting to happen in my opinion and theyve now paid the price by having to offer refunds. hope this isnt the start of a disasterous weekend for oasis, especially after looking at weather forecasts for saturday and sunday. cant see noel especially being happy about it all

'probably expected from crowd like that'like what exactly? there were thousands of people at this gig, no reports of violence, yet you tar them all with the same brush. This is bigoted nonsense from someone who probably assumes that football supporters are all thugs too. When has there ever been any reports of violence at oasis gigs? The 'yobs' you speak of are too busy hugging each other and having a good time! pi## of you posh bigot

I know someone who went and he said it was a excellent night. He didnt mention the delay at first.....so it cant have been such a big deal.

Biggest band in the world my ARS*. If it isn't Noel falling of stage, It's technical problems. When will this bunch of overrated twats actually complete a full gig. They are getting a little Micheal Jackson in their old age.

"Credit crunch and that" says Liam. Sure, he appreciates how hard things are, which is why his new range of t-shirts start from £40.

I was at the Gig last night in the Front Pit where the atmospehere was electric, unlike the generator. Technical faults happen but it didn't spoil the night at all. Liam and Noel gave it there all as way of compensation and that was enough for me. One of the best bits was the walk from Heaton Park back in to town with thousands of people the banter was brilliant. Lets hope the "1950's Generators" quoted as being said by Noel will survive the weekend. Wristband into the Front Pit a Must for Saturday and Sunday. Live on Oasis and Manchester Music.

Darve - what you going on about? violence? there was no violence....! Sort yourself out!

claremck

Jun 5, 2009

There was no riots at all it was good fun and everyone was having a great time and it didnt spoil it having the delays. and i dont think it warranted a refund really although im happy with that! we still got to see a great show good times

How much was beer????

spike1972

Jun 5, 2009

Really great gig. True festival atmosphere and no trouble. Superb FULL set. Noel's comments were a bit silly but it was obvious the band were as pissed-off as everybody else. As a result they got really stuck into the set - easily my best Oasis gig. I wouldn't want a refund.Beer: £3.50, Queue for women's toilets: 500m

rizzle85

Jun 5, 2009

£3.50 a stale pint as usual.Ha. I think it was overall a poor gig, one headliner cancelled-how often do these bands suffer from food poisoning or sore throats eh..hmmm. Power failures...whats a sound check for eh, as for credit crunch..they can both do one the freedy guckers. £49.50 for a shorter show-read the M.E.N- a partitioned field where if you were outside the front pit it was hard to see anything. just seems like a massive disaster cake with an overpriced cherry on top....Liam sang well though which he hasnt done for approx 8 years.

TOMQ84

I've seen Oasis live quite a few times and yes there has been problems in the past, but this is really expected when the music has to be so loud to cover at area as big as Heaton Park, Goin tomoro and sure i will not be let down. Cracking setlist tho, shame there is no Stay Young or Rockin Chair tho.

Dozeyb

Jun 5, 2009

Beer was £3.50 but they were giving you a 10p refund for all empty cups being brought back... That provided for entertainment in itself as Piss heads were running arount collecting empties off the floor to afford there next pint, classic. There was no violence of any sort even duringh the techincal problems, I had great banter with plenty of people from all walks of life. The only heavy handedness was from the security staff trying to stop people cross no mans land into the front pit but again this provided for half an hours Great Entertainment as they were jeered and boo'd. Wristband is a Must Must Must, get there early, get the wristband. Then go chill out in the field and enjoy the warm up acts if they don't have man flu....!!!

The gig was ace, bit of a glitch but no bother. Best thing is Liam has stopped that feckin annoying habbit of backing away from the mike half way through every line :)

Alibongo88

Jun 5, 2009

I really don't understand what all of this fuss is about, so what if we had to wait a bit longer? it's ridiculous to get hung up on technical glitches. Liam seemed to be the most pissed off, I really don't think anyone in the crowd was that bothered!I was in the front pit and it was absolutely amazing, just made friends with the 'yobos' around us whilst they sorted the generator out,it was a good laugh all round! I thought the band, the setlist and the crowd were all tip-top =Dto above comment, I went in at about 4pm and got a wristband...didn't even realise I was a lucky one until much later!

I'm applying for a refund. I wasn't going to, because afterhe problems were sorted it was a mindblowing show. But after walking the best part of 3 miles back to the amazingly well patrolled bowlee park and ride-which cost me a bloody tenner to use- i found out that my car had been broken into and now i've got an insurance excess to pay, and the only way i can afford that at the mo is by claiming a refund. Sorry to shaft you like this lads, it was an amazing gig, but needs must........

EddieG

Jun 5, 2009

Noel's funny. Starts off by offering refunds and proclaiming it a free gig, by the end he's calling those brazen enough to claim a refund as cunts? I'd claim my money back just for shits and giggles!

claza

Jun 5, 2009

i had a great time, oasis sounded excellent once evertything was sorted. The only thing that let it down were the scallies who couldn't handle their booze kicking off with people and all the men urinating everywhere when there was more than enough facilities provided for them!!

pezza_themaker

Guys, last night was the 18th time i have seen oasis live, it was a shame about the bad start and as ever they came back and rocked the show both Liam and Noel seemed to give it their all and it was probably one of the best sounding performances for a while. we got there at 2pm and went straight to the front pit and sat down about 4 rows from the barrier "this is the only place i would watch oasis...it just feels much more personal and the atmosphere is truly rockin!!!!". My theory on Liam backing away from the mic is that he seems to burn out his vocals towards the end of the set and he does it towards the end of a gig when his throat is getting worse so he doesnt have to carry the characteristic note on the end of each line which is so much a part of his character. Probs the reason why i always try and go to the first night of the tour.As for scrapping, there were around 4 fights around me during the course of the night one of which was just deserts for a muppet that pushed right in front of everyone with what looked to be his missus and was just being a general n*b head. he must have anoyed one guy cause he ended up sparked out!!!!!! oh well a great way to spend the gig with a sore face hahaha.keep rockin boys awesome gig !!!!!!!!!!!!

oasis_till_i_die

Jun 5, 2009

Don't know why people are saying there was violence at the gig, did they even go? I went last night and the crowd did boo, oasis where off the stage for 45 minutes but when they came back on the crowd give them a massive cheer. Oasis and the crowd just got on with it and both enjoyed the gig! Oasis where amazing live shame about the enemy not playing and shame about the generator but it was still worth the money even though i'm getting it back haha

Darve you t*t!!! There wasn't any trouble heard of at all!!!!! Instead of writing s**t comments like that on here go and have a long word with yourself!!!!!

barry247

Jun 6, 2009

Of course there was a bit trouble. I saw five fights, my colleagues made 15 ejections and I had someone approach me to say a bloke was unconscious on the floor. Percentage wise not too bad - but I wouldn't say there was no trouble at all!!

TimesUp

Jun 6, 2009

"Darve you t*t!!! There wasn't any trouble heard of at all!!!!! Instead of writing s**t comments" Hmmmm, i think you need to read the rest of the comments above CCCCPPPP. Since someone claimed to have seen atleast 4 fights!! So just because you didn't see trouble, doesn't mean there wasn't any... So lets not be be hasty with the shit comments talk!!

No violence, slight delay - great show! Why do NME readers always come out with so much sh*t! I won't be claiming my money back, like you other tight c**ts!

Going on Sat.Anyone know where to get the wristbands from please?

lbosher13

Jun 6, 2009

I went on the 4th and was disappointed but not at all with the performance of any bands. I found the partitioned area annoying as half the people we went with had them and others didn't and the toilets were unbelievable. The amount of portaloo's for an event that size was stupid and to see so many people just relieving themselves anywhere was disgusting - definate better planning required.Oasis were amazing and to give fans their money back was v. generous. I'd still go see them again!!!

Oasis gig was well good , may of had sound problems but that was only a small glitch .. still an a* gig with 70,000 singing to wonderwall you can't beat that ..!
