Liam Gallagher: 'My new band may still be named Oasis'

Plus singer says he'll 'always be busy' if Noel calls

Liam Gallagher has said that the band he is set to record new material with may still release their album next year under the Oasis name.

The singer said he was "halfway there" in terms of early work on the album with bandmates Gem Archer and Andy Bell, who were also his bandmates in Oasis prior to the departure of his guitarist and chief songwriter Noel Gallagher in August. He also said they had studio time booked for early 2010.

"We're halfway there. We've got all the songs done," he told the Evening Standard. "We've got a bit of studio time booked after Christmas and we're going to get in there, do it quick, with no stewing on it."

Speaking about the name the outfit would adopt, he said: "We're not using it [the Oasis name] at the moment, but if we don't come up with something else by the time we're ready to release the album it'll be Oasis. I'm not going to call myself something ridiculous just for the sake of it."

Liam went on to explain that the band wouldn't play any songs written by Noel when they play live, and that he wasn't even receptive to the idea of speaking to his older brother again.

He stated: "I'm sure he thinks [of Liam], 'I'll do my solo career and if it doesn't fucking pan out the way it's expected I'll give our kid [Noel] a ring because he'll be desperate and he'll do anything for Oasis.'

"Well, I'll say this right now: he's got another fucking thing coming. If he thinks he can ring me up at any given stage in his fucking lifetime, I'll be busy. I'll always be busy when he rings me up."

As well as outlining his album plan Liam recently announced his wish to play live again within "a couple of months".

The word 'Oasis' means something to people. Leave it be. And I'm sure Noel won't come crawling back, his new solo album is going to be shit hot!

who does this idiot think he is? I'm a massive oasis fan, but i always liked them in spite of this goon, who hasn't even been able to sing well since 1997. The best song liam's ever written wouldn't make it into noel's top 30, and shame on andy and gem for playing with him, he's just gonna hold them back like he's been doing to noel for 20 years

He's so deluded now, all of his credibility has completely diminished, does he really think pissing on Oasis' legacy will make Noel mad? People aren't going to be queuing to see an 'Oasis' show when one of the highlights will be Little James.

Oasis - Noel Gallagher = Utter Shite

Eventhough Oasis were good back in the day i think the split was the best thing they could have done. Liam i feel couldnt be bothered anymore, seeing them on tv at the iTunes gig showed that he couldnt be arsed to sing. Why he might still use that name is ridiculous as surely that book is closed?

He stated: "I'm sure he thinks [of Liam], 'I'll do my solo career and if it doesn't fucking pan out the way it's expected I'll give our kid [Noel] a ring because he'll be desperate and he'll do anything for Oasis.'Makes more sense if you get rid of the bracketed names. Sounds like Liam was referring to Noel's attempt at a solo career and himself as the one Noel thinks would do anything for Oasis if Noel rang him up and suggested it.

Interesting comments. There is no Oasis without Noel. There would be no Oasis without Liam. Together, they are Oasis. I figure anything Noel releases will outsell anything by Liams new group material. But, keep the name Oasis out of it.

So, does this mean if "Oasis" plays live their set will be about 25 minutes? Last I checked about 90%, if not more, of Oasis music is Noel's.

Please know that these media reports are aways taking things out of context and only reporting certain statements to make a negative picture and in reality this may be inaccurate. I do believe Liam thinks Noel will fail like most who pursue a solo career and come begging for a reunion, how many reunions did we see over past 5 years? I think Noel will make a great album but it will be like a Paul Weller acoustic style but better. I hope ANdy and

I hope they don't use the Oasis name because it might ruin any chance of an Oasis re-union tour in a few years

I think that Liam with Gem and Andy will probably put together a few half decent tunes but they aren't and will never be Oasis without Noel.I am genuinely looking forward to a Noel Gallagher solo album and tour, he was always the brains and the talent behind the band.I'm hoping for a solo debut at Glasto!

So Liam is essentially dropping the songs that made him famous? Fucking hell, you know he'll end up calling Noel once it goes tits up and beg him to rejoin and all will be right once more.

I dont think they willl perform under the Oasis name but i expect the bands new material to be good, Liam Gallagher is a talented songwriter and Gem and Andy have both contributed great songs to the recent albums and b-sides.Noel is the most prolific songwriter of the last 20 years and his solo album is going to be great but his legacy has been tainted by the fact that recently he has become a sarcastic, media friendly cartoon of a rock star who has used the press to continually ridicule his brother and bandmate expecting no retaliation. In my opinion it was only a matter of time and Liam was entitled to have it out him - i have a brother and i would of done the same. the fact is Noel left the gig and let the fans down yet somehow he has managed to paint a picture of himself as some kind of bullied schoolchild...it's pathetic.

It would be so EPIC if Noel comes back in response by reforming with the original members of Oasis sans Liam! I would LOVE to see that happen.

Hmmm...

Dec 2, 2009

Oh I don't know, whatever that was on that clip on here playing in the background, when he was prancing up and down modelling... thought it sounded pretty damn good actually. Wasn't Oasis, but it was definitely him.

I don't think that they should use the Oasis name - as Liam has stated that band is done. I am really looking forward to the new album though. I wouldn't want Noels song played at gigs - it's a new band. Hope Andy is back on guitar too. When you think of the recent none Noel Oasis tunes i think that the new band could have real potetntial - they will never reach the same heights as Oasis but who cares - just enjoy the music and be glad that the UK's only real rock and roll star is still going.

I really would like to know how this man manages to reconcile such venomous words with his suppossed John Lennon 'Peace and Love' mantra. He puts the 'con', 'trad', 'dick' and 'shhhiioonn' into contradiction. Fittingly, the worlds most expensive cruise ship is launched this month, its name being 'Oasis of the Seas'. Why not use this as a name Liam? With the loss of Noel, you and your conglomerate of chancers have indeed gone to sea. Liam, it would be all to easy to destroy you in a battle of wits, so if you want to go down your usually Mick Hutnall route, then I live in Chorlton, Manchester. Respond to this and I'll meet you outside Morrisons whenever suites you. You have ruined what was once my favourite band. Long live ABBA.

I've been an Oasis fan since 1994 and I think it all started to go wrong when they used crappy songs written by Liam, Andy and Gem, they were ok but would be hard to try and out do Noel when it comes to song writing.I don't see Noel crawling back to Liam on his hands and knees anytime soon!Once again just Liam and his big opinion of himself it seems.

Rockriot: Excellent. Absolutely. You said everything that should be said and nothing that shouldn't, and you said it well. We are told by NME that only 'The best comments will appear here,' but if that were true we'd only see rockriot's. Madmax2b: Who on earth is Neol? John Mark: You say "I really would like to know how this man manages to reconcile such venomous words with his suppossed John Lennon 'Peace and Love' mantra." Have you ever heard the 'Imagine' album? On that same album is John's biting 'How Do You Sleep?' Do you have any idea how ironic your words are? I mean, when has Liam ever had a peace and love mantra? I think you've confused Liam and Lennon. And Liam and Noel (Noel having been more critical of Liam, and Noel having written some 'Love-ish' songs). I think you're just very confused. And Me=you=poo says "I'm just going to go ahead and say it...what is on everyones mind...Liam Gallagher is a dick." But that's what everyone's been saying. Are you kidding? And I don't think the claims have been justified, not given the love for Noel. I'm going to leave it there. Can anyone explain why these comments are all so weird?

they were exciting at the start, very funny, then quickly like a lotl of bands got stale, released endlessly repetitive music and to their credit remained funny, but not been cool for along time ,made shitloads of cash, probably last of the big bands to do so!

I don’t think that we should fool ourselves by thinking that Oasis was gonna last forever. Even the little boy that witnesses the all too common sight of mom flinging the fine china at his dad’s head, whilst dad is telling the bitch to shut the f@*k up, knows that this union is heading for the crapper. They had a mighty awesome run, albeit with plenty of friction. We all saw it coming, but I think of it this way… We are gonna get twice as much music from them separately then we would have together. We will also get better quality since each brother is trying to show the other off on account that they have something to prove.

Tell us what you think. We’ll print the best responses in the NME letters page each week.
