Alan McGee: 'My musical isn't going to be about Britpop'

Ex-Creation Records boss says show could feature Oasis tunes, though

Alan McGee has scotched reports that he is writing a musical about the Britpop story.

The former Oasis boss told NME that although he was writing a show for the stage with Trainspotting author Irvine Welsh that would feature "some of the tunes" from the time period, the plot wouldn't focus exclusively on the music scene of the mid-'90s or the history of his old label Creation Records, which he founded in 1983.

He said:

I don't want to give away what we're already talking about, but it's not going to be like 'Noel walked in and then Liam walks over, and then Bobby Gillespie walks in'. It's nothing to do with Creation or Britpop in that respect.

The Daily Record had previously claimed that the musical would document the story of Creation Records, as well as reliving the chart battles between the likes of Oasis, Blur and Pulp.

Earlier this year, it was reported that McGee had turned down offers from the BBC and Channel 4 to make a film dramatisation of Creation Records.

The Scottish music mogul said he had disagreed with plans to make the movie a "straight" dramatisation, and preferred Welsh's idea of morphing McGee's character with the Sex Pistols' impresario Malcolm McLaren and Andrew Loog Oldham, who managed The Rolling Stones in the 1960s.
