One Direction's announcement of a world tour yesterday (May 16) saw over one million tweets generated on the subject in little over an hour.

The pop band staged an elaborate press conference at Wembley Stadium in London to confirm that they will embark on a huge tour in 2014, including a date at Wembley itself. The announcement followed days of build up from fans and within half an hour of the tour being announced, the topic filled seven of Twitter's 10 worldwide trends. Twitter has confirmed that one million tweets were posted on the topic in the first 80 minutes that it was revealed. For context, it took four hours for one million tweets about the death of Margaret Thatcher's death to be posted on the social networking site.

However, the tweets were not all positive with many One Directions fans posting about the announcement being a let down and the hashtag #ONEBIGDSIAPPOINTMENT among the trending topics. The fans complaints centred around a tour happening months away not being enough given the build-up, and also fears of not being able to get tickets as they are too expensive and phone lines likely to be very busy with millions of fans around the world all trying to buy them at the same time.

The UK leg of the One Direction tour starts on May 28 at Sunderland’s Stadium Of Light with dates in Manchester, and Edinburgh confirmed as well as the gig at London’s Wembley Stadium on June 7.
