One Direction's 'Midnight Memories' named biggest-selling album of the year
Boyband's third album overtakes Emeli Sande's debut to top 2013 sales chart
The boyband's third album has overtaken Emeli Sande's debut 'Our Version Of Events' to top the year's sales charts. The Official Charts Company report the album has sold more than 685,000 copies in the five weeks since its release.
Scottish singer Sande's album has sold 683,000 this year, and looked like it was going to be the biggest seller for the second year running after shifting around 1.4million copies during 2012. The figures mean no album by a single artist has reached a million sales in 2013, for the first time in more than 20 years. Despite this, Official Charts Company chief executive Martin Talbot called One Direction's speedy ascent "a very impressive achievement".
'Midnight Memories' debuted at No 1 on the album chart, selling more than 237,000 copies during its first week, which also makes it the fastest selling album of 2013. The record made chart history in the US, too, entering the Billboard 200 at No 1, making them the only group to have their first three albums top the chart in their opening week.
The One Direction documentary movie This Is Us, directed by Supersize Me star Morgan Spurlock, recently became the fastest selling music DVD/Blu-ray in UK history, selling 270,000 copies in its first three days of release.
