Muse close first Oxegen night with spectacular stageshow

Trio blast through greatest hits set after 30-minute delay

Muse closed the opening night (July 7) of the Oxegen Festival with a spectacular stage show on the Main Stage.

The trio, whose performance was delayed by 30 minutes after Snow Patrol’s set ran over time, did not disappoint as they rolled off a greatest hits set from their back catalogue.

Kicking off their bombastic 75 minute show with ‘Take A Bow’, the band’s stage set was similar to their indoor UK tour at the back end of 2006 with drummer Dominic Howard sat in a giant space chamber while giant screens fired off animated projections of the band, giant robots and galaxy backdrops.

Singer Matt Bellamy, who donned the same red suit and white t-shirt he wore at the band’s recent Wembley Stadium shows, complimented the crowd before adding: “Thank you Oxegen. You are looking amazing. Yes you are.”

The band played a host of hit singles from ‘Black Holes And Revelations’ and ‘Hurricanes And Butterflies’ including ’Supermassive Black Hole’, ’Starlight’ and ’Invincible’ along with ’Time Is Running Out’ and ’Stockholm Syndrome’.

The trio also threw in classics ’Plug In Baby’ which saw giant white ballons released over the crowd before closing the show with ’Knights Of Cydonia’.

Wrapping up their performance, which is likely to be their last date on the British Isles for some time, Bellamy told the crowd: “Thank you Oxegen for sticking with us in the cold. It has been a great pleasure to be here."
